Values

First Presbyterian Church, Bloomsburg, values and recognizes the power of prayer for and in a faithful Christian life. Our worship proclaims God’s glory and power and acknowledges God’s presence in the world. In worship the relationships within the community are strengthened through shared and personal prayer, praises sung, and offerings of peace and friendship. At FPC Bloomsburg music is especially important in expressing faith whether made by instruments or voice. The congregation is committed to the needs of the larger community by supporting it with time, talents and funding which contributes to a positive quality of life. The church offers educational opportunities that foster growth, endeavoring to honor the Theology of the Reformed tradition. FPC Bloomsburg welcomes all seekers, strives to be authentic in all ways, and remembers and utilizes the connectedness of Presbyterianism.

Brief description of the church/organization's programs or accomplishments:

At First Presbyterian Church, Bloomsburg’s programming centers on four areas: worship, education, outreach, and fellowship. Worship occurs on Sunday mornings and special holy days such as Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve. Communion is held the first Sunday of each month. Two part-time professional musicians lead adult voice and bell choirs and accompany congregational singing with pipe organ and piano. Volunteer musicians lead and accompany a children’s choir. Under the direction of a part-time DCE, FPC Bloomsburg conducts Sunday School for children and adults, LOGOS (serving elementary age children of the church and community), biannual confirmation class, Vacation Bible School, and a combined youth group with youth from Berwick’s Presbyterian Church. The pastor, with elders, leads training for new officers and seekers. Presbyterian Women hold monthly Bible studies and twice annual successful rummage/bake sales. Outreach involves annual budgeted gifts to such local causes as AGAPE (serving the local poor), Bloomsburg University Campus Ministry, Food Cupboard, Women’s Center, Theological education and mission co-workers and projects in Egypt, Malawi and Nicaragua. FPC Bloomsburg opens its doors to many community organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous, TOPS and a Salvation Army Service Unit. Fellowship activities include regular visits to persons with special needs, congregational coffee hours, luncheons, potluck and progressive dinners, game night suppers and work days.

Gifts, Skills and Experiences the congregation possesses to fulfill its mission:

Blessed with members possessing skills in education, music, health care, social welfare, law, science, engineering, business, visual arts, banking, landscaping, computer, and home repairs, FPC Bloomsburg has a pool of qualified leaders who contribute to congregational, Presbytery, Synod and community activities. Some of our adult members have mission experience in the United States and around the world. Some of our youth have done mission work on the East Coast. A number of our members have become pastors or missionaries. Currently, two daughters and one son from our congregation, now members of Presbytery, serve the church in various ways. One serves as the Protestant Campus Minister at Bloomsburg University, one recently finished a hospital Chaplaincy, the third serves as our Minister for Spiritual Development. Congregants have filled many leadership roles in the Northumberland Presbytery and we have also sent Commissioners to General Assembly. Members are leaders of community organizations including the Women’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Bloomsburg Public Library, the YMCA, Columbia/Montour Chamber of Commerce, Bloomsburg Community Garden, the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, Scouting and the local Food Cupboard.

Key theological issues of the church and society that are reflected in the ministry of the congregation/organization:

While adhering to our Reformed and Biblical tradition, we acknowledge the diversity of theological positions among the membership of First Presbyterian Church Bloomsburg and the denomination. Somewhat unique in our stance on issues within the local Presbytery, FPC Bloomsburg strives to focus on the central work of the church. The work we are called to do is to proclaim Christ, share God’s Word and serve others by ministering to the hungry, homeless and sick.

All seekers are welcomed into worship and Christian fellowship. The congregation elects women and men, youths, persons with special needs and minorities to positions of leadership. FPC Bloomsburg poses no theological litmus test other than constitutional questions of members, leaders or staff, many of whom come from non-Presbyterian backgrounds. The congregation’s expectation is that, in a sinful and ambiguous world, our members, leaders, clergy and staff will examine their attitudes and actions in the light of the Gospel of Christ and where appropriate, repent, seek forgiveness and correct their ways.
