Brief Church Mission Statement:

Sharing the grace of God with one another and the world around us.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Second is a community of faith who, led by the Holy Spirit, seeks to form, nurture and strengthen relationships in order to share the grace of God in Jesus Christ with the world around us. Our congregation is a wonderful mosaic of varied people and interests-a vibrant community that is holding our own in the face of challenging times for traditional suburban churches. We strive to hear God’s call both individually and as a community.  Our members have been blessed by God but also face the human challenges that befall our society. We live out our faith through praising God in worship and music, warm fellowship with all who seek respite in the sometimes lonely world, educational opportunities that stretch the minds of children, youth and adults (including a preschool established 65 years ago) and local and international mission outreach.  We seek to provide care to those experiencing need, loss and difficult transitions. We try to be a safe haven in a time of world crisis and secular demands. We welcome all who want to explore their relationship with God. Families and individuals are cherished and supported.  By welcoming all to come as they are, Second strives to live out Jesus’ call to all people to develop their relationship with our Creator and gratefully receive and share divine grace finding strength and hope through our Triune God.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Second seeks to reflect God’s love for us. We praise God in two Sunday worship services and offer Sunday school for infants to adults. Weekly programs include Bible studies, Wednesday dinners, youth Open Gym and small groups like painting, Pilates, and supper clubs. Additional worship is offered during Lent and Advent. Our church family is served by 21 ordained deacons. Community fellowship is enjoyed through events like our fall festival, church picnic and trivia night. Long term ministries include our Weekday School that provides early childhood education to 175 children. Children and families are also nurtured through VBS, summer camps and Sunday school for parents. We offer a rich music ministry with choirs for all ages, a bell choir, and an endowed concert series. We share our gifts widely with local mission partners like The Cabbage Patch, The Healing Place and The West End School. Working with Kentucky Refugee Ministries, we have sponsored 4 new refugee families in the past 18 months. Our partnership with Peace Presbyterian expands our social ministry, and we support their neighborhood food outreach. Internationally, we have mission relationships in Costa Rica and El Salvador. Second shares grace during crises with COVID 19 and Tornado Relief Funds, vaccine clinics and blood drives. Members serve on charitable boards throughout our community. Gathering as individuals, small groups and larger ministries, we seek to follow Jesus’ call to a life lived in God’s grace.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

The Associate Pastor for Community Life (APCL) has a vital leadership role in helping our congregation find comfort in God’s grace and thus be able to reflect that grace more widely. Connection is a key aspect of the role. The APCL will preach and support the worship life of the church. Providing pastoral care to our large congregation is an important responsibility of the APCL ministry. A central part of this role is leading and equipping the Deacons who assist in supporting our members through life’s challenges. Our Outreach ministry strives to make all feel welcome to participate at Second, making our faith community encouraging and accessible to those around us. The great joy of Second is that our members seek time together in Christian community; thus Fellowship is vital in creating opportunities to gather outside worship and in offering access points for the wider community. Many of our ministries rely on our church Property. Thus the management of our building figures prominently in this senior staff position. Supervising our Technology needs falls under the APCL as technology has expanded our reach and provided additional avenues for connection. A warm, welcoming, supportive faith community that raises awareness of the undeserved gift of grace that we’ve received will benefit from an able shepherd in the role of Associate Pastor for Community Life.
