Brief Church Mission Statement:

Practicing the love, compassion, and radical hospitality of Jesus Christ

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Vision: An inclusive fellowship of active, committed Christians joyfully serving all people of our community and the world.

Federated Church is a progressive oasis in a conservative county, with an emphasis on social justice as an expression of Jesus’ call to love one another, and a solid foundation of good preaching.  Our activism is a strong part of our congregational identity, with a history of serving the community through ministries of food, emergency housing, temporary shelter, faith services at juvenile hall, and an accredited preschool, seeking to actively care for the earth, and supporting the global missions of the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church USA.

A member of both the Presbyterian More Light and Reconciling United Methodist programs, Federated openly invites people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Children’s programs in education and music have long been a strength, although we have experienced a drop in participation over recent years. Observing the Season of Creation in worship and education programs reinforces our practice of caring for the earth.

Though affiliated with both the Presbyterian Church USA and the United Methodist Church, Federated congregation members hail from diverse faith backgrounds including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Episcopal, and more. Our congregation believes that by celebrating weekly communion, open to all people, we sacramentally live the inclusive vision of our church.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Articulate and model a progressive perspective of the Christian faith, lifting our voice in the community so that our song is widely-heard. We seek to improve communication with our congregation and the community through a strong online presence, taking advantage of emerging technologies to effectively practice radical hospitality permeating all aspects of our congregation’s life and work.

Reach beyond denominations and across generations, reigniting the spark in an established congregation by creatively utilizing social media to attract and engage the unaffiliated, young people and families, while not leaving our older members behind.

Define radical hospitality as inviting everyone to participate fully, regardless of age, gender identity, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. Knowing there is a sizable LGBTQ population in our area, we desire to be more pro-active on inclusion.

Communicate, raise awareness, and invite the people of FC to connect with Christ's community locally and throughout the world, serving the growing needs of the poor and marginalized. Strengthen our participation in community collaborations, including the winter Nomadic Shelter program, SHARE food closet, Upper Room meal ministry and HELP emergency housing.

Utilize the traditions of the PCUSA and UMC in worship services, while exploring new and creative ways to worship and contemplate God in the church pews or on mountain tops, riverbanks, meeting halls, or online.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

This position will act as a catalyst for our congregation; to inspire us with ideas for new forms of worship, while upholding our denominational connections. We seek a pastor who will ignite our compassionate hearts, rock us out of our complacency and move us toward revitalization, creativity, compassion, and justice.

Utilizing strong communication skills this pastor will compel the congregation to build on its current strengths while simultaneously forging new relationships both within and outside the church walls. It is through these relationships that coordinated action can take place to move us in the direction of our goals, our vision, and our mission.
