What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

We are a warm and welcoming congregation striving to follow our mission statement of “Glorifying God, Growing in Christ, and Giving to Others.”

This congregation places high priority on worship with two identical traditional style worship services each Sunday. Many of the young families who have joined did so because they prefer worship that is grounded in the Reformed tradition. While we have some members who are native to Brevard, many have chosen Brevard for its quaint, small-town setting and its proximity to both Asheville, NC and Greenville, SC. We hope new programs will capitalize on the few inter-generational institutions left in our society. The membership has a heart for local outreach such as Sharing House, Habitat for Humanity, El Centro, House Calls and Black Mountain Home for Children. We also have a strong partnership with the Horeb Church in Guatemala. An intergenerational group recently took a mission trip to that country. Members help members in times of need – transportation to church and doctors’ appts, home repairs, promoting a van ministry, gathering on a workday to do yard work or to help the Preschool get ready for another school year. Also gathering for meals at special times of the year always provides good fellowship. The “coffee time” following each service is a good time to meet new members or share the week’s news.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

As most churches in North America, we face some challenges in a culture that is increasingly secular. We are nevertheless confident that, as in the past, God will lead us. We believe that the greatest thing to ever happen to the world is God’s gift of Jesus Christ to the world, and we are honored to have the privilege of sharing that, beginning with our nearest neighbors. In that spirit, we have come to the joyful conclusion that the time is right to enrich our church’s life and witness by calling an Associate Pastor.  The congregation sees a bright future and is eager to move forward in the process in partnership with the Presbytery. We are eager to seek an Associate whom God is sending to help us “Glorify God, Grow in Christ, and Give to Others.”

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

Members feel that the recruitment of youth and young families will be a high priority for our new Associate. While we are grateful for the several young families we do have, the congregation would like to see families from our weekday Preschool welcomed into the life and work of the church.  A second strong indicator from the survey is an emphasis on Local Outreach.  Members are well aware of the many needs around us here in Transylvania County. While Global Outreach is also an important part of our ministry, the congregation’s emphasis remains focused on Local Outreach.  Thus with the guidance of Presbytery we are poised to call an Associate who is passionate about the Gospel and a team player who preaches, teaches and serves humbly in helping to lead the congregation in both its work and its worship

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

B –DRPC members are looking for someone with enthusiasm, who is a good listener and can work with all age groups.  Being an excellent youth leader is very important as well as drawing in young families some who are not regular attendees. The optimum candidate would be a good teacher who is grounded in the faith, spiritually mature and motivational in presentation.  Pisgah National Forest is our backyard and has beautiful waterfalls, Sliding Rock, hiking trails, biking enthusiasts, tubing, fishing, picnic and camping areas all of which are opportunities for activities with youth and all ages of our membership.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
  • Working with youth and young families by increasing children’s programming and young family activities
  • Local outreach initiative
  • Preaching one Sunday a month and more if needed
