What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
Our congregation’s vision for ministry is to provide spiritual growth. This can be accomplished through:
• developing and presenting sermons which connect spiritual applications with current events
• working with the congregation to develop innovative programs to expand our reach within the local community
• visitation, technology, sermons, music, revivals, special speakers; a manse is available either as a residence or for church programs and outreach
• work with the congregation to utilize church facilities that are available for special programs and events that would nurture the congregation and the community
• as the church community is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and about an hour away from major cities and attractions, should have an appreciation for rural lifestyles and picturesque surroundings
• demonstrating grace through love, hope, forgiveness and peace |
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
The congregation supports the following ministries with funding:
• Yokefellow - a local organization supported by many churches that assists struggling individuals and families
• Foothills Hospice
• Grace of God Rescue Mission
• Local Elementary School Assistance
Through our continued support, these organizations are able to provide additional assistance to our community.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
Through the infusion of new ideas, energy, and enthusiasm into the church, and through collaboration with the session and church membership, our congregation and the community will be stimulated and encouraged to become more involved in outreach that meets our mission goals.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
In no particular order:
1) A working knowledge of current and emerging technology to enhance communication of God’s message of salvation as part of the church’s mission.
2) Ability to get people to work together while encouraging feelings of belonging. Gradually lead the change process successfully while anchoring changes to the congregation’s vision and mission. Also recognizing and understanding our congregation was established during the Revolutionary War (1768) and emphasize the rich historical value and uniqueness of the church.
3) Ability to actively listen and communicate a clear and precise message through sermons that are biblically based and appropriate for the time and place. Sermons should seek to lead the church toward realizing our mission.
4) Is adaptable in response to new and changing conditions from unexpected obstacles or ambiguities. Remains open to new ideas and approaches, while maintaining focus on the mission.
5) An ability to unify the congregation within the community through involvement in local church and civic organizations that help further our mission.
6) Realizes the needs of a rural environment and community. Provides pastoral care and support while being empathetic to the conditions of others.
7) Encourages and supports the session to use it’s leadership abilities to bring the congregation toward community service and accomplishment of the mission.
8) An ability to operate in and relate to residents from many socio-economic levels. |
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
The following assignments are all important, but listed in no specific order:
• Preaching
• Teaching (ex. Bible Study, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, etc.)
• Planning and leading worship services
• Moderating the Session
• Administering sacraments
• Being available to officiate weddings and funerals as needed
• Providing pastoral care and short-term counseling if appropriate
• Helping develop and administer outreach goals
• Providing orientation and training for new church and session members
• Assisting the congregation to develop appropriate committees which facilitate accomplishment of the mission
• Providing leadership where needed
• Helping maintain a vision for our church based on our mission
• Involvement with the community, possibly through civic or church-related organizations
• Will be available to the congregation, while also having the flexibility to take personal Sabbath time. This also includes posting office hours for the week, and participating in continuing education opportunities. |
