As part of the Body of Christ, the Synod of the Trinity, through the responsible use of shared resources, supports and challenges member Presbyteries to be vital, innovative, and faithful in their collaborative and distinctive callings.

The Synod of the Trinity exemplifies “Being More Together” by following its primary end. (See above Mission Statement.)
The Synod:

  • Works together with presbyteries to support congregations’ ministry and mission,
  • Supports presbytery leadership through training, networking and continuing education.
  • Supports presbyteries by assisting them in times of transition and discernment.
  • Offers an array of grants and partnerships.
  • Financially supports presbyteries and their congregations through multiple efforts, e.g. Self Development of People, Small Church Leadership Development, domestic and international mission efforts and hands-on aid..
  • Addresses social justice issues.
  • Supports camps, campus ministries and Presbyterian-affiliated colleges and universities.
  • Follows its secondary ends:
    • Connect presbytery leadership for coordination, spiritual support and sharing best practices.
    • Encourage innovation in, between and among presbyteries with human, programmatic and financial resources.
    • Provide education and nurture for member presbyteries.
    • Extend presbyteries’ partnership in joint and shared mission and ministry.
    • Nurture relationships with the larger church for the purpose of greater witness.
    • Foster conversation and action for the promotion of social righteousness.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

The Synod of the Trinity is committed to a holistic vision of the Good News, following Jesus’ model of ministry (Luke 4:18-19) in the context of emerging regional, national and global issues. In light of the rise of extreme ideologies, violence, mass shootings, and the widening of the socio-economic gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots” the Synod has placed a priority on promoting conversation and action around social righteousness.

This past fall, the Synod offered opportunities for its beneficiaries to consider and engage some of the issues and concerns of our times in light of Martin Luther King’s Beloved Community. This followed on the heels of a series of regional meetings in 2019 – titled “Silence is the Welcome Mat for Hate” – that addressed the growth of hate groups and proliferation of hate speech within the Synod’s bounds.

In response to the pandemic and challenges faced by the Synod’s beneficiaries, the Synod has provided support through monetary grants for new technology so presbyteries and churches may forge creative and sustaining ministry via technology. The Synod has also facilitated among its beneficiaries the sharing of best practices and experiences of God’s goodness during the pandemic.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

The Executive will be the key leader as the Synod of the Trinity continues to move into a new way of operating, not only organizationally but also physically, as well as facing the emerging challenges of a post-pandemic church, whether they be financial, organizational, theological or relational. Throughout its 305-year history, the Synod and its predecessors have been among the strongest and most vital in the denomination, so the Executive will be operating from a position of support and strength. With that said, the Executive should be aware of the ever-changing dynamics and fundamentals of demographic, socio-economic and socio-political change, and be committed to a vision of widespread social justice. The Executive should demonstrate a record of cross cultural and intercultural experience as he/she provides leadership for the 16 rural and urban presbyteries, each of which faces different challenges, while striving to meet the Synod’s primary and secondary ends.

The successful candidate will be someone who:

  • Can take initiative in connecting presbyteries, commissioners and other partners.
  • Can creatively implement the ends of the Synod as developed by the governing commission.
  • Is willing to work collaboratively with staff and colleagues in ministry.
  • Can use technology efficiently and creatively to connect staff, commissioners, presbyteries and churches in ministry.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in adapting to new information and situations as the landscape changes.
  • Can help uncover and support the varied needs of presbyteries in the Synod.
  • Is adept and creative in developing and using resources more than in planning programs.
  • Is a clear and motivating communicator, both internally and externally, through active listening and verbal skills.
  • Is committed to and comfortable working in a global, multilingual and multicultural community.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The Executive is the chief administrator, responsible for implementing Synod’s Policy Governance Ends and overseeing personnel. The Executive leads the designing, implementation and managing of the Synod’s vision and mission. All responsibilities are predicated on the Executive’s faithful adherence to Synod’s Primary and Secondary Ends, within the limitations defined in the Policy Governance Manual.

  • Lead in accordance with principles of Policy Governance.
  • Lead ongoing support of presbyteries.
  • Lead the Synod in fulfilling its connectional responsibilities to the General Assembly and the presbyteries within their missional contexts.
  • Serve as chief communicator for the Synod.
  • Serve as head of Synod Staff.

Any candidate, to be considered for this position, ordinarily shall meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Minister of Word and Sacrament or Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
  • Possess professional employment history with at least 5 years' experience at comparable mid-council or above level.
  • Be/become knowledgeable in Policy Governance, cultural proficiency and the dynamics of socio-economic changes.
  • Be capable of and comfortable leading and managing in a virtual, diverse and ecumenical setting.
  • Demonstrate professional written and oral communication skills; knowledge of another language is recommended.
  • Demonstrate capacity for resilience, high emotional intelligence and self-care.
  • Be willing to live within the bounds of the Synod of the Trinity.
