What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
In February of 2019 Salem Presbytery approved a new vision for our mission, witness and ministry.  The primary focus of this new structure will be to support and strengthen local churches, worshiping communities, and campus ministries to be engaged in God’s work in the world, and to nurture partnerships in order to carry out joint ministry. This new structure and design is not based on planning ministries and programs at the presbytery level, but rather in assisting and supporting congregational leaders, Teaching Elders, CREs, Educators, and congregations to be faithfully and fully engaged in the work God is doing in our communities. The primary energy and focus of all that we do is to support churches working in mission and partnerships.

This vision will be lived out in two very important ways. First we strive to be “relentlessly bottom up” where the work of the Presbytery is to assist and strengthen all of our churches and worshiping communities by supporting those congregations’ leaders. Second, we strive to strengthen meaningful connections within the Presbytery. 
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
Salem Presbytery is facing the same cultural and economic shifts that confront our larger denomination. How we face the realities of this new day for doing ministry will determine the relevance of our church in postmodern America. We choose to see these shifts as opportunities to joyfully and creatively share Christ’s love and justice to a hurting world. To do so, we will empower new forms and expressions of ministry.  

Under our new structure we seek to serve and support our local churches in shared ministry. The model is a vision of a Presbytery with a decentralized structure of small partnerships built around shared values and shared missional endeavors. By embracing this model we acknowledge the diversity of our worshipping communities and recognize that one size does not fit all. Our goal in working with all our congregations is to engage in the question, “How can we help you in your ministry?”
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
The person in this position will play a key role in helping Salem Presbytery implement and then live into this new structure. It is an exciting opportunity for someone with a creative and entrepreneurial spirit to help lead the development of our mission and vision.

The work of the Presbyter for Administration will function in two roles: a. to ensure the healthy and faithful governance of the church within our bounds, and b. to support the witness of congregations to do God’s work in our communities and world. The work Presbyter for Administration will not be the maintenance of traditional programatic ministries but rather promoting decentralized partnerships among pastors and churches and worshiping communities.

Candidates for the Presbyter of Administration will be ordained ministers in the PC (USA) and hold a deep love for Christ and the church.  They must be well-versed in PCUSA polity and governance. They should have strong communication and organizational skills and have a proven track record in successful organizational management. They should possess compassion, good listening skills and the ability to relate to a variety of individuals in varying contexts. They should work well in collegial settings and encourage shared ministry among the Presbytery staff. They should be a non-anxious presence as they respond to a variety of challenges in the life of the presbytery and its congregations.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
The Presbyter of Administration will serve as the head of staff and assume the responsibilities of the Stated Clerk. They will focus their work on the administrative functions of Salem Presbytery to support the ongoing work of pastors and presbytery members, overseeing the resources and standing committees. Specific tasks include but are not limited to:
-Communicating the mission and ministry to churches in Salem Presbytery.
-Directing the work of Salem Presbytery, serving alongside presbytery staff as a witness to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
-Representing the Presbytery on all applicable Boards of the P.C. (U.S.A.).
-Coordinating the work of the following committees: Commission on Ministry, Committee on Representation,  Presbytery Judicial Commission, and the Executive Council.
-Maintaining oversight of the Salem Presbytery budget, striving to ensure short and long-term financial stability.
-Serving as Stated Clerk for Salem Presbytery, carrying out the duties and  responsibilities as set forth in the Book of Order, and in the Handbook for Stated Clerks prepared by the Office of the General Assembly of the P.C. (U.S.A.).
-Handling diversity in racial, cultural, and theological matters in an effective manner while seeking to maintain the peace, unity, and purity of the Body of Christ.
-Providing a listening ear and sound wisdom to any person or constituency for advice and encouragement, or when conflicts arise within particular congregations or within the Presbytery.
