Brief Church Mission Statement:

The mission of Savannah Presbytery is to engage, encourage, and resource congregations and members of the presbytery as together we serve Jesus Christ, so that we strengthen the church, equip the saints for ministry and reach beyond ourselves.

Our vision is for each congregation and member of the presbytery to be vital in ministry, supported in meeting existing and emerging needs, and connected in Christ-like ways for shared mission, all to the glory of God.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Savannah Presbytery is to Connect, Assist, Support, and Equip our community of churches.

Vision Statement: Building a community of churches connected together to spread the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Savannah Presbytery connects through three annual presbytery meetings and occasional pastor gatherings. We assist congregations by the work of the General Presbyter, Presbytery Council, COM and CPM. We offer prayer, monetary support and support of broader PCUSA programs, especially the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Finally, we have excellent programs to equip adults and children including our School of the Laity, Faith Enrichment Conference, Presbyterian Women, and Summer Camp and Youth programs.

After eighteen months of work, the 2020 Visioning Task Force recently submitted a report with recommendations for the presbytery. We are seeking a transitional leader who can help us evaluate, implement, and build on these and other recommendations as we move forward into a new system. The 2020 Visioning Report can be found at
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

At the 2020 Visioning Task Force’s final meeting a member shared that the most significant inter-church relationship his congregation has is not with another church of the presbytery, but with a Baptist congregation nearly an hour away. While certainly a beautiful example of ecumenical collaboration, his comments underscore a sadness that the strongest face-to-face support his congregation feels on a regular basis comes from outside the bounds of its own connectional church. The long physical distances between churches of our Presbytery can make it hard to connect.

The greatest need for Savannah Presbytery as we move forward is to strengthen the bonds between congregations and to rebuild relationships that for some seem disconnected. We want to steward the resources we have to support one another and exhibit the nature of our connectional church.

The taskforce specifically identified these as assets to build on:

Though small in size, Savannah Presbytery is strong in spirit. There is an uncommon collegiality and desire to be together among the churches and pastors of the presbytery. This spirit is most evident in the success of the many programs we participate in together – e.g. School of the Laity, Faith Enrichment Conference, and presbytery meetings.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

PURPOSE: To serve as the spiritual leader and head of staff of Savannah Presbytery. Provide administrative leadership for the implementation of presbytery decisions, oversee presbytery operations, and be a pastor to ministers, lay leaders, and their families. Lead Savannah Presbytery in discerning and carrying out its mission and priorities for ministry during a transitional period and serve as Stated Clerk for the presbytery, assuring that the duties and responsibilities of that office are accomplished.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Transitional GP/SC is a full-time position accountable to the presbytery through the Personnel Committee of the Presbytery Council. The Personnel Committee will supervise and provide for a yearly review of his/her work while providing prayerful support, encouragement for his/her well-being, and opportunity for continuing education. The presbytery, at the recommendation of Council, shall contract with the TGP/SC for one year, which can be extended.
