What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

In 2014, Charlotte Presbytery launched a Presbytery-wide visioning effort called the Emmaus Team.  The result of this work culminated in a strategic plan that the Presbytery approved in May of 2017. 

The intention of that strategic plan describes the Presbytery’s vision which is to create a structure that will distribute and balance perceived and real power and locate it in the life, ministry and mission of the congregations in the Presbytery.  This new vision and structure seeks to create conditions for new ministries, risk-taking, and relationship building.  Characteristics that shape this vision and structure include being nimble, connectional, self-examining, lean, and flexible.

Through listening to congregations in the Presbytery, we seek to organize our connectional work around six foundational areas of ministry: Discipleship, Evangelism, Pastoral Care, Worship, Mission, and Community Building.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Our new structure is built to address and adapt to the emerging needs within the congregations of our Presbytery.  This structure centers around three main areas of engagement: Ministry Teams, Task Forces, and Standing Committees.

Ministry Teams are created by individuals, groups, or congregations as each discerns new mission and ministry by the leading of the Spirit.  Ministry Teams involve individuals or groups from more than one church of the Presbytery. 

Task Forces are flexible organizational components that provide the ability to focus on one topic or issue and the capacity to include people in the Presbytery with a passion for the work at hand.

Standing Committees are organizational units defined by the Book of Order and the Administrative Manual (standing rules) of the Presbytery.  Of particular note in our new structure is the Ministry Resource Committee (MRC) which will seek to connect to every congregation and Session by asking, “What is God doing with you and your community?”  And, “How can the MRC support you in this ministry?” 

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

Charlotte Presbytery has spent recent years developing a new strategy to better join Christ in building, celebrating and anticipating the kingdom of God both near and far. Having recently installed our new General Presbyter, Jan Edmiston, the Associate General Presbyter will work with her towards the strategic plan approved by the Presbytery of Charlotte. The Associate General Presbyter will work largely with the MRC (Ministry Resource Committee) to equip congregations and continue asking the question, “what is God doing with you and your community?” The Associate General Presbyter will also work with the Ministry Teams of the Presbytery to network among the churches in the Presbytery.
