The Dorchester Presbyterian Church of Summerville, South Carolina is called by God and organized to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. We minister to the needs of members of the congregation, residents of the community, the nation, and the world. We promote peace and justice, and as an Earth Care Congregation, we are engaged in environmental stewardship.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Dorchester Presbyterian Church is a congregation that deeply values their ministry of one another, the community, and the world. We help members to discern and discover their interests and gifts for ministry, and thus help them fulfill their individual and congregational calling to be part of the Body of Christ. As we transition from the a Pastor-led to a program-centered congregation these are the ways we hope to live out our vision:

Faith: support each stage of a believer’s journey with Christ: exploring, and growing, in order to develop a close Christ-centered life.

Service: local, global, and mission efforts that direct our budget to follow our member’s hearts and hands at work.

Youth: our largest budgeted ministry: the children and youth programs center our efforts for growing our younger generation of Christian disciples.

Worship & Music: lectionary and theme-based sermons; personal testimony, pulpit & choir exchanges, youth-led worship service, outdoor services, Christian holiday services.

Prayer: supportive prayer chain community, pastoral and deacon care.

Education: DPC has one of the highest Sunday school attendance to worship ratios in our Presbytery; from pre-school to retirement, age-appropriate biblical lessons for each stage of our daily walk, and multiple adult Sunday classes.

Stewardship: including tithing and giving of our time and talents, we also care for our 50 acre campus including our wildlife sanctuary, trails, and garden for Katie’s Krops.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Dorchester Presbyterian Church is called to reach out to address the emerging needs of a growing ministry of our youth, members and community:

Youth: DPC’s 40+ youth and 10+ experienced dedicated youth advisors continue to sustain a thriving youth program. All take part of our mission through service to the Members of DPC: Youth Sunday, youth Elders, etc., local community and outreach via mission trips: Salkehatchie, pay-it-forward outings, mystery mission trips, etc. Our weekly fellowship and small group sessions provide a fun, spiritual foundation for these youth. There are highly attended Summer youth conferences. We are returning to the model of an ordained, full-time Pastor to lead and organize this ministry while growing their faith.

Members: Our hands on, Sunday School attending, involved congregation is sustained through programs such as Presbytery Women, Deacons, prayer chain, fellowship events, Montessori styled children’s church, as well as salaried nursery care-givers. We feel a need for strengthening our full-church fellowship, worship/pastoral-care support, and communication/technology.

Community: Our community support, consists of, but is not limited to, an on-campus 70 child preschool called the Good Shepherd School, Second Sunday stewardship of local homeless shelters, a local mission day called Dorchester Serves Day, and crafting of surgical caps/prayer shawls for MUSC. We host in our facilities Boy Scouts, Red Cross, and college mission trips. 

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We are returning to the model of an ordained, full-time Pastor to lead and organize the youth ministry. The scaffolding of the ministry is strong, however, this person would be able to devote the time to bring it to another level with more in-depth discussions and experiences through research and multimedia tools.

Having a second pastor will allow our current pastor more time to devote to other responsibilities. This position will also give us the opportunity to enhance our worship experience with a second voice and potentially add an additional Sunday service.

With the guidance of two ordained pastors we aspire to be more of a member-led congregation. This would inspire our members to achieve our mission goals and other dreams of adding additional retreats, bible studies, prayer groups, etc.

Our church has a history of having long-term pastoral leadership, therefore, our desire is to continue this tradition by calling a candidate who sees youth ministry as a career.

DPC Youth Group is the most important and influential peer group in our youth’s complicated and involved lives. We pray for an Associate Pastor to guide them spiritually and biblically in order to mentor these developing Christians. We are searching for a leader who cares passionately and will be involved in their active lives. The Associate Pastor should be someone they can trust and confide in, be fun and flexible. We also need someone technically savvy, capable of communicating effectively through the apps and methods which teens utilize.

This is not a junior position. This role is a co-leader of a church without a strict hierarchy. Thus the position involves a passion for working hand-in-hand with the other pastor in worship. He/she must have the ability to envision what needs to be done and have the initiative and confidence to take charge.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
  1. Youth Ministry

    • Lead, plan and organize weekly youth activities along with weekend retreats, mission trips and summer conferences.

    • Support and attend youth members' outside activities (e.g. sports, music, etc.)

    • Recruit volunteer advisors and oversee involvement

    • Organize registration, payment collections, and activities for retreats, conferences, and mission trips

    • Develop annual calendar and budget

    • Weekly communication with advisors, parents and youth

  2. Church Leadership

    • Help to plan and lead weekly worship services

    • Preach one sermon monthly

    • Attend Session, Worship and Christian Education Committee meetings

    • Provide information and assist in preparing annual activities report

    • Coordinate website and online communications

    • Participate in Presbytery activities and events

  3. Leadership in a 3rd area of need for the church
