The First Presbyterian Church desires to serve God, to nurture our congregation and community through worship and education, and to utilize the resources of our Presbytery. We will continue our long history and broad scope of mission involvement, and we will open our doors to all who desire to share the gifts of our building, our hospitality, our fellowship and Christ’s love. Based on feedback from the congregation of First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, the areas we will focus on are Mission, Hospitality, Preschool, and Effective Stewardship of Resources.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

First Presbyterian is a strong church located in the city of Waynesboro with a dedicated, active, welcoming congregation and rich history dating back to the early 1700’s. We see our vision as to open our doors to those who desire to share the gifts of our building, hospitality fellowship and Christ’s love. We focus on mission, hospitality, preschool and effective stewardship of resources.

The congregation lives out its mission through:

  • Providing food and provisions to less fortunate community members through the Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, Four Cents a Meal, participating in the annual Crop Walk and participating in the Disciples Kitchen.
  • Conducting monthly Presbyterian women meetings at Summit Square Retirement Community
  • Hosting one of the Community Lenten luncheons
  • Staffing and maintaining a Preschool program with affordable rates
  • Tutoring at a local elementary for at risk children
  • Supporting missionaries in the Middle East
  • Providing free monthly community organ concerts
  • Opening our facility to the local symphony for free community concerts
  • Financially supporting Habitat for Humanity
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

First Presbyterian Waynesboro strongly believes our mission is to serve members of our community, we support that mission through:

  • Overseeing and financially supporting the operation of a weekday Preschool for children ages 2- 4.
  • Staffing and financially supporting a Food Pantry which provides food and provisions twice per month to less fortunate members of the community.
  • Providing volunteers to deliver meals to elderly and home-bound members of the community
  • Providing volunteers to staff the Disciples Kitchen, a local soup kitchen open to individuals and families in need of a hot meal.
  • Being receptive to new and emerging opportunities.
  • Providing assistance in emergency situations on an ad hoc basis.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
The interim/transitional pastor will lead through a crucial time in the life of the congregation, helping us evaluate our ministries and staffing model, while challenging us to find innovative ways to deepen our service to God and our community.

The interim/transitional pastor must have:
  • training, experience and commitment to intentional transitional ministry
  • strong administrative skills
  • a collaborative leadership style
  • proficiency in identifying and adapting to local culture
  • a commitment to the Reformed faith and Presbyterian polity
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
The Interim Pastor will serve as the spiritual and administrative leader of the congregation, session and staff during the pastoral transition.
  • function as Head of Staff, keeping regular office hours
  • moderate session and facilitate the work of session committees
  • plan and lead worship in collaboration with staff
  • administer the Sacraments
  • provide pastoral care as needed
  • support the various educational ministries of the church, teaching as appropriate and as time allows
  • membership and active participation in Shenandoah Presbytery
  • close coordination with the Committee on Pastoral Transition
