How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
We are a community of Christ extending our hand to those in need reaching out to needs of others, who may or may not attend our church, in throughout the year. For years, we’ve hosted community luncheons giving our community a place to gather for food, fun, & fellowship. Our VBS partners with another community church to minister to our local children.  We have an active youth group that meets for study, worship, supports local needs through giving, & loves to travel. McElwee hosts Easter egg hunt, summer ice cream social, community picnic, pumpkin carving, inspiring lamp lighting service & Christmas pageant welcoming all & filling our chapel to the brim.  We & community gather for wood-cutting weekends providing for those in need.  We host a Christmas cantata that draws many from the community.  We work closely with neighboring churches to provide community services.  Our mission committee works with MissionNext-Door & Re-Habitat to assist in much-needed community home repairs. We deliver Food Pantry items to shut-ins & make financial donations. We made donations to flood victims in WV.  What are our priorities?  (Based on recent Congregation Assessment Tool or CAT)   Develop & execute in-depth strategy to reach people & unite them into church Make changes to attract families with children/youth to our church Deepen our sense of relation to God & each other through stronger worship services. Develop ministries that work toward healing those broken by life circumstances.
 
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
In our recent CAT Study we identified the three most critical abilities for the new Pastor.  They are:
  1. Preaching
  2. Strategic Leadership
  3. Pastoral Care
     
    Our new pastor will lead us in worship and the study of God’s word, and guide us as we strive to live Christ-like lives and continue the work we are doing in our community. The pastor will motivate us to expand our efforts as we grow and assist us in implementing our plans for the future.

1.  Become part of the community  a. Live in Manse or 24473 (Rockbridge Baths) zip code. b.  Attend most if not all Church Sponsored Events  c.  Contribute to VBS  d   Encouraged to join local groups & organizations  e. Take an active role in assisting with the direction of all Church Committees f.  Be community minded g. Work out of Church office during normal hours
 
2.  Deliver inspiring Sermons a. Have a theme & message that speaks to us at Bethesda & McElwee Chapel b. Spend the necessary amount of time in reflecting on & preparing the message c. Work directly with the Worship Committee insuring the service is harmonious with the message 
      
3.  Enjoy & spend adequate time in Pastoral Care functions a. Visits ill & infirmed at home & in medical facilities on ongoing basis b. Make family visitations c.  Offers sound & confidential Counseling d.  Assists grieving families e.  Greets & welcomes Newcomers at church & at home
    
4.  Provide strategic direction & leadership for Session & Committees a. Continually analyze needs of Church & conveys to Session b. Assists Session & Committees in strategic planning c. Explore & investigate alternative programs offered by other congregations that would benefit our Church d. Advise & offer direction when needed
 
5. High Energy Level a. Be excited about calling & carrying out duties of the position in order to excite others  b. Be a catalyst that will bring out the excitement & high level of commitment within the Congregation
 
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
*Preach at Bethesda Sunday Morning & McElwee Evening services
*Lead/ delegate Bible Study
*Work with Worship Committee preparing services which will be well-prepared, honor the Lord,  & in a form suitable for our church
*Lead in Communion & travel to those confined & infirmed 
*Lead in baptism
*Perform home/ hospital/ nursing home visits on as needed basis which are for counseling, strengthening relationships, attending to needs of infirmed, meeting prospective members, gaining greater insight into needs of flock 
*Available to perform weddings, funerals, & attend functions as needed outside of church
*Dedicate time for professional studies & growth including classes, seminars, outside committees etc
*Responsible for church administration including staff,  building & grounds. This does not imply that he will do these things: only that he will appropriately oversee & delegate
*Work closely with Personnel Committee Chair to ensure that all staff fulfill job description requirements
*Be a member of all church committees & boards, including working with Trustees & Session
*Delegate & oversee planning of outreach activities in surrounding neighborhoods. He will oversee assimilation of new attendees & work toward creating an inviting environment in the church
*Participate in & oversee Christian Education including Sunday School classes, youth, & adult education. He will delegate many responsibilities to church volunteers
