What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

As a spiritual leader in the community for over 275 years, we provide a vital ministry that is focused on Christ’s teachings that are relevant to a broad range of members and their daily lives, offering a strong and personal spiritual experience. We seek to glorify God and fulfill our mission as part of the larger body of Christ. We are called to proclaim the unconditional love of God and the good news of forgiveness and salvation which are gifts freely given to us by the grace of God through our faith in Jesus. Led by a strong worship leader and effective communicator, involvement of members in ministry to each other and to surrounding communities is paramount.

Our congregation is open to exploring new ideas to further our spiritual revitalization, our energy, and our outreach ministry, as we are seeing a revival taking place within the congregation. This is especially true in nurturing the growth of our under 35 age group and their young children. We work best when all members can offer their gifts and talents to contribute to the spiritual growth and functionality of the church, relying on our commitment and willingness to make visitors feel welcome and ensure our members are spiritually fed, enjoy fellowship and participate in quality worship experiences. We are a church that strives to have something for everyone. We are inspired not only to reach all age groups through worship, but to involve all ages in our worship services and the life of the church.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

We are called to a spiritual connectedness to Christ and leading individuals to a deeper relationship with Christ through community outreach. Led by our very active Congregational Teams, we are currently engaged through a variety of programs such as Feed the Flock (monthly meals), Open Doors (homeless shelter), West Rockingham Food Pantry (monthly food provisions with other churches, feeding hundreds), support of Circleville WV community (mission outreach), an emergency needs fund, Backpack program (elementary assistance), the Dick Miller Fund (financial support to those in need), the Blanket Fund of Church World Services, and supporting many non-profit community organizations. A recently created weekly women’s Bible Study group is thriving. Cooks Creek is also a Certified Hunger Action Congregation. We wish to not only continue these ministries but to grow and expand them to creatively use our resources touching the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs, while demonstrating spiritual love.

We want to continue reaching new people, expand our education program, and attract new families to our church. We want to show potential members the many opportunities available at Cooks Creek as a welcoming place to help people in their search for spirituality and meaning.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We have the compassion, love, willingness, and motivation to execute our vision. Many groups within the church have pieces of the vision; we need someone who can translate that collaborative vision and help us implement it. This includes our music ministry, new Sunday School classes, various styles of worship, and making church fun for the youth. A strong leader, with a balance of energy, inspiration and confidence to paint a comprehensive picture for our congregation, is what we envision. The pastor is the leader of the church, the captain of the ship. A strong, balanced minister will work with our leadership team to direct the overall church culture and guide the congregation toward goals in preaching, teaching, developing congregational leadership, and demonstrating a comfort level with all generations. A fresh, exciting perspective to the teams operating these ministries is needed to continue sharing our faith.

Addressing all kinds of learners through worship and teaching Biblically relatable stories with real life applications are important to our church members. Our new pastor must demonstrate and display an example of what it means to live for Christ.

Cooks Creek seeks a pastor who is welcoming, friendly, positive, approachable, and theologically sound. Our new minister should have a sense of humor, be accepting of all, and encourage involvement and ownership among our members. Spiritually attuned to God, this person should be well versed in scripture, exhibiting a Biblically focused approach with creative sermons that are strong yet easy to follow. A powerful communicator, who is intelligent, grounded, and who exhibits a high level of moral integrity is a must. Having the capacity to inspire and connect people to God’s word and to have the capacity to cast a vision and lead us to that vision is desired. We seek a minister who will engage people with compassion and care for persons in times of need.

For the love our congregation has for its members, our pastor should be empathetic, a good listener, and seek to visit with members. For the surge of youth and the faithful parents who bring them, our pastor should be energetic, advocating for opportunities that encourage fellowship and spiritual growth. For the spiritually mature, as well as those just starting their walk, our pastor should be a strong leader, yet allow freedom for members to explore their calling and service. For families, who, for many generations, have called Cooks Creek home their entire lives, our pastor should preserve our 275 years of heritage, yet still find ways to make our church a place to grow.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
Our new pastor will lead Sunday worship, conduct and collaborate children’s sermons with others during worship service, provide visitation--especially to those in hospitals, nursing homes, or sick--moderate the Session to provide for the life and ministry of the congregation, and serve as the Head of Staff.

Responsibilities will be to mentor and consult for Sunday School and other educational programs, plus the normal pastoral functions such as, but not limited to, serving Communion, funeral services, and weddings.

The pastor will have the opportunity to offer church-wide Bible study, providing theological leadership in preaching, education, and stewardship, which may include trips and mission work. We seek a strong worship leader preaching the whole Bible, offering interesting and adaptive techniques for multiple types of learners. We also desire a vision for music that appeals to all. The minister will collaborate with the Choir Director and Organist for Sunday worship selections, including the adult and hand bell choirs, as well as a potential children’s choir.
