We believe we are a people called together and sent out by God to be Christ’s disciples. Sustained by the Holy Spirit, we seek to discern the will of God, and to alleviate suffering in the world. We rejoice in the gifts and the blessings we have received, and anticipate future joy in a closer relationship with God through Christ. In faith, we dedicate our lives to God through vital worship, study, fellowship, leadership, and world mission, which perpetuates and renews our relationship with God and community.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
The vision for ministry of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church involves five priorities identified through a year-long process of discernment, discussion, and prayer. They are as follows:
  1. Adapt our worship and build our community mission focus to attract families with children and youth.
  2. Develop a comprehensive strategy to reach new people and incorporate them into the life of the church.
  3. Provide more opportunities for Christian education, mission work, and spiritual growth at every age.
  4. Develop ministries that work toward healing those broken by life circumstances.
  5. Work to renew and revitalize the community around the church by building coalitions with partners that share this vision and commitment. 
The church has begun to initiate this vision by building on our current ministry and by developing new opportunities for members: 
  1. Youth On A Mission: community and regional mission opportunity for children and youth from ages 5 to 22. 
  2. Presbyterian Women:  Service activities through monthly Bible study, international mission giving, and worship/bereavement support.
  3. Community Outreach: BVPC worships twice a year with First Baptist Church of Buena Vista. FBC worshippers are predominantly African American members of our community. This relationship will hopefully be expanded to include a blending of youth groups for local mission projects. 
  4. Missionary:  BVPC supports Chenoa Stock, PC(USA) Mission Co-Worker Companionship Facilitator in Bolivia. 
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
  • Make necessary changes to attract families with children or youth to our church
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to reach new people & those members who do not regularly participate, and incorporate that strategy into the life of the church
  • Provide more opportunities for Christian education and spiritual formation at every age and stage of life
  • Develop ministries that work toward healing those broken by life’s circumstances
  • Develop or expand outreach ministries that provide direct services to those living on the margins of society such as the hungry and the homeless
  • Develop the spiritual generosity of the people to financially support the ministry of the church
  • Work to renew and revitalize the community around the church by building coalitions with partners that share these visions and commitments
  • Strengthen the pastoral response of the church in serving people with special needs

  1. Make changes to attract families with children and youth to our church by increasing focus on Christian education and outreach.
  2. Work to revitalize the community around the church by building coalitions with partners like First Baptist Church and possibly other churches in the area.
  3. Engage and care for people in time of need such as loss of a loved one, loss of a job, drug addiction, or legal issues by showing them that they are not alone and that help is available for them.
  4. Advanced leadership to get more members involved in the work of the church such as serving on committees and Session; attending worship on a regular basis; and participating in activities provided for youth and adults.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
 1. Preaching and Leading Worship- Inspire and connect people to God's word.
 2. Pastoral care – Have regular contacts with all members of the church, including visits to sick, hospitalized, elderly, and shut-in congregants. Demonstrate a spirit of love and acceptance for all of God’s people.
 3. Strategic Leadership- Implement the church’s vision/goals as outlined in Narrative Question #1, leading the church toward realization of this vision. Bring creative solutions to obtain this vision.
 4. Teaching/Training - Deepen understanding, form character and equip members with new skills by providing opportunities such as bible study, mission programs, and youth projects.
 5. Change Management – Provide positive leadership to guide the church through changes that result in an increase in family and youth involvement and overall membership engagement.
 6. Community catalyst - Function on a larger stage beyond the church to address critical issues in the community and the world at large.
