Brief Church Mission Statement:
Celebrating God's Grace, Inspiring the Next Generation for Christ.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
First Presbyterian Church strives to minister to the hearts and needs of the entire church body--both young and old--with joyful, loving spirits.  We desire a strong Christ-centered, supportive church community founded on loving acceptance and invested in nurturing relationships with one another.  We seek to be more than just Sunday morning pew-mates, doing more than saying hello, giving the proverbial "how are you," shaking hands, and saying goodbye until next Sunday.  We desire a selfless commitment to service within the walls of the church and in the world around us and we seek to develop the spiritual hearts of the church body through Christ-centered discipleship and programming.  At First Presbyterian, we aspire to grow closer to God so that, as a church family, we can experience the love of Christ as God intended.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
First Presbyterian is a vibrant and growing congregation with a diverse range of spiritual needs.  We are poised to expand our ministry of compassion, outreach, and service to our community, our nation, and our world.  By identifying our needs and providing opportunities for church members to utilize their financial resources, skills, talents, and time we can respond more fully to Christ's command to "go and make disciples of all nations" as a witness at home and abroad. We actively seek ways FPC can meet community needs using members of our congregation, set measurable annual goals and objectives for outreach, and continue to develop strategies to maintain sustainability of supported missions.  We also want to make a concerted effort to encourage the inclusion of youth, families, and single adults in our outreach missions.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
Inspired by God’s grace, this Associate Pastor for Service and Outreach will help First Presbyterian Church achieve our vision and mission goals by providing an additional spiritual leader, not only to minister directly to our parishioners, but to enhance the ability of our church to minister to the surrounding community and beyond. This individual will complement the efforts and talents of other staff members, including the head of staff, in the development and implementation of the service and outreach programs of our church and will inspire and enable members of the congregation to come together to support and achieve our mission goals.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
We seek a leader who, through First Presbyterian Lynchburg, works to serve and connect the interests of people in need in our community, our nation, and our world. We seek an AP who:
  • is an engaged leader who is comfortable and willing to actively participate in the life of our church and community
  • is a team player who works well with others on staff, in the congregation, and our community
  • embraces our church members each day of the week and not just on Sunday morning--someone who shares a seat with us at high school theater, dines in our homes, cries with us, laughs with us, prays with us, walks humbly with us, and wails with us at tragedy
  • is comfortable in the pulpit and has a passion for communicating the Word of God in a relatable manner
  • is authentic and grounded in faith such that s/he can be a motivator, capable of expressing joy to others
  • builds consensus through experience, active listening, and mutual respect
  • knows how and when to take initiative
  • is able to lead from the front as well as empower others to lead
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
The call of the Associate Pastor for Service and Outreach will be an integral part of our vibrant congregation and community. In addition to pastoral responsibilities (worship leadership, staff administration, pastoral care), areas of emphasis for the Associate Pastor include the following:
  • develop measurable goals and objectives, achievement strategies and assessments of the mission and outreach programs of FPC
  • make recommendations for additions, modifications, and improvements of said programs
  • develop and lead outreach efforts to attract families, youth, college students, and single adults
  • devise and implement creative ways to effectively communicate with our diverse congregation
  • identify and promote special missions and supportive activities
  • promote special offerings directed toward selected missions
  • determine special courses outside of the budget, planned benevolences, or volunteer opportunities which should be brought to the attention of the Session
  • develop and maintain liaisons with community groups receiving our financial support
  • assist the Congregational Life Committee in outreach and response to visitors and new members
  • worship leadership that is innovative and relatable
Most importantly, however, we seek an individual who will bring love, joy, enthusiasm, creativity, fresh ideas, and a long term commitment to his or her position as Associate Pastor.
