Brief Church Mission Statement:

To glorify God as we seek to live, express and faithfully demonstrate the Great Commandment and the Great Commission of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Sardis’ vision for ministry is rooted in our core values:

  • A family growing in faith together
  • Where you never walk alone
  • Where we discover and follow our calling
  • Appreciating our past and embracing our future
  • Serving God by serving others

We are a 225 year old church rich in tradition and at a crossroads.  We cherish our mission work, both at home and abroad.  Although we have an established heritage, our members are also willing to embrace contemporary worship and new ideas.  Some of our traditional programs include Sunday school, small groups, youth fellowship, scouts, youth sports and interactive mission outreach.  Our history shows that these programs have had a positive impact on our church family, but we have also seen a decline in participation.  With societal changes in our community, we realize that our church must change and grow so that we can meet the needs of our members and our neighbors.  We believe we must start from within and focus on the spiritual development and revitalization of our congregation.  We want to honor our core values and commit to truly being a family in faith. Through God’s inspired word and through the imagination and initiative of our church family, we hope to revitalize our worship and Sunday school.  By healing from within, we can be equipped spiritually and financially to go where God is leading us.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Sardis addresses the emerging needs of our community through a balance of active service and programming.  Sardis’ reach into our communities includes supporting an underperforming neighborhood elementary school, serving in our local soup kitchen, and preparing and serving meals for the Salvation Army Women’s Shelter.  Sardis House, a dedicated building completed in 2012, enhances our outreach activities.  The facility includes sleeping, laundry, bathing, dining and meeting areas.  Its usage includes welcoming and housing our homeless neighbors two nights a week through an Urban Ministries program, hosting out-of-town youth mission groups, and providing office and meeting spaces for outside organizations.  For example, in 2016 forty-nine different organizations used our campus.  However, Sardis needs to discern how best to expand our support and participation in our community.  We have seen a drop in the number of members participating in these discipleship opportunities and need to re-energize the congregation to continue and expand our community reach.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

Sardis’ past history has been one of outreach both to our own as well as community and global missions. Like the Sardis and Laodicea churches, we have a reputation of being alive but we recognize we are lukewarm and need to wake up and be strengthened.  We want our minister to encourage and empower the session to renew and energize our congregation while carrying out our witness to God’s kingdom.  Our senior pastor needs to inspire from the pulpit a consistent message of growing in our faith in Jesus Christ as we walk through our daily lives.

The senior pastor must encourage our pastoral staff while leading and challenging each in their strengths and limitations to reach the goals of their job descriptions.  Our senior pastor needs to provide leadership to our Christian Education program, cultivating lay teachers and once again making it a vibrant ministry.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

Sardis seeks a senior pastor who is led by the Holy Spirit to enthusiastically lead us spiritually, strategically, and compassionately.

Spiritually, we need a pastor able to preach God’s word in both a traditional and contemporary format, reflecting a deep faith, intellect, spiritual maturity, and humor that will energize and motivate our congregation. Our pastor needs to also be a teacher, capable of growing our Sunday school and small groups into vibrant and nurturing ministries that appeal to young people and families while engaging our mature congregation.

Strategically, we need an energized leader who will define and develop a vision and challenge us to aggressively pursue our stated Mission and accomplish our strategic objectives. Our pastor needs to embrace our vibrant history and help us navigate our changing community and social dynamics. Our pastor must also understand our past and be willing to engage in healthy conflict to help us move forward. We must revitalize our Christian education, equip members to be lay leaders and teachers, and renew our cherished tradition of mission work.

Compassionate pastoral care is important to our congregation. We want our pastor, with warmth and compassion, to minister to the needs of those who are hurting. This pastoral care should extend to joyfully participating in church life activities, enjoying regular fellowship with our members. Our pastor must be a visible, authentic leader who will guide us with warmth, humility and grace.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The Senior Pastor/Head of Staff for Sardis Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, NC will be responsible for:

  • Leading worship in both the contemporary and traditional services
  • Ensuring pastoral care for the congregation by nurturing and caring for those in need
  • Training, coaching and mentoring the session as they develop a vision, direction and priorities of the church and its strategic objectives
  • Managing the pastoral staff and director of administration through ongoing communication and performance reviews; assessing leadership, talent and programming while providing leadership and spiritual guidance in the daily and weekly responsibilities of the church
  • Supporting stewardship by inspiring the congregation to give its time, talents and resources
  • Providing oversight of the church’s financial integrity

We look for wisdom and guidance from the senior pastor to help re-invigorate Christian Education for both adults and children, providing teaching and guidance in programming from early foundations of Christian education for children to adult classes that are instructive and inspire theological engagement through/in God’s word.

In an ever-changing world and community, we seek inspirational leadership from the senior pastor in meeting the challenges as we discern God’s plan for our church and its role in our community and world.
