What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
Carmel believes God’s vision, found in scripture, is to use us to spread his Word so He may transform us and others into the image of his Son. (Colossians 1:3-14). We must proclaim Jesus as Savior. (Colossians 1:28). Our proclamation is strengthened by the prayerful dependence on God. Through this dependence Carmel is “rooted” in Christ and his teachings and called to be examples of love, compassion, and faithful dedication to “every good work.” (2 Corinthians 5:18-21; Colossians 1:10, 2:6-7).

Carmel’s vision is to be a church that proclaims God’s word in order to save, heal, disciple, and serve in Christ’s image.

Carmel lives out its vision by encouraging, sharing and engaging all to adopt the Christian life. Consequently, worship is a reflection of scripture, proclaiming a joyful message that nurtures all in their daily walk with Christ and invites everyone to accept God’s gift of unmerited love, grace and salvation. Studies and groups are based on the Gospel, a message of faithfulness to God, and focus on Jesus’s sacrifice. Fellowship is a means to bond one to another, focused on strengthening each other’s faith and commitment to serve. Public events are opportunities to evangelize by reaching those that need Christ in their lives. Missions are a personal and corporate responsibility to show God’s love to the greater Charlotte community and beyond; being a beacon of Christianity to encourage others to join us on the path to salvation.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
Carmel is called through its mission statement to transform lives to proclaim, love, and serve Jesus Christ.  In particular, the Church and its congregation have a great calling to minister to individuals and families and welcome them into a loving community of both fellowship and discipleship.

Consequently, Carmel’s present calling is to effectively offer appealing opportunities that fill the cup of spiritual life. Carmel feels it has been called by God to find innovative, creative ways to engage our community with Christ-like love and to welcome them to a dynamic Christian congregation.

Carmel reaches out to its constituency and others by offering worship, study, and programming that focuses on the Gospel. Carmel has sought to fulfill this calling by recently hiring a new Associate Pastor for congregational life, emphasizing the foundations of a transformed life for its children, youth and adults. We are presently pursuing new educational programs that fulfill this call.

Carmel has been committed to offering community outreach through participation in programs including Room in the Inn, Stop Hunger Now, and support of Brookstone School, a faith-based school teaching under-resourced families in Charlotte. This missional spirit of Carmel is to outreach to the unchurched, those seeking, and those in need of the love of Jesus Christ.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
Charlotte is a community with a strong Christian history. However, like most of the country, Carmel sees the historical commitment waning in an age where there is so much to take the attention away from God. The congregation and staff of Carmel are not oblivious to this challenge and have recognized changing trends in both the community and the congregation. There is a membership gap at Carmel from 18 to 40. Traditional efforts meant to engage this demographic have not been successful in the past 10 years. Thus, the Church feels that it is called to utilize its loving and welcoming foundation in ways that will attract the younger generations. Carmel is therefore seeking a senior pastor who has the characteristics and drive to fulfill this calling.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
The ideal candidate for Head of Staff at Carmel Presbyterian is a pastor with the characteristics and commitment to connect to the emerging church of the younger generations. The pastor should balance that focus by engaging the established congregation with love and support.  Carmel is therefore looking for a pastor who has the qualities of:

A focus on preaching the Gospel which is relevant to the twenty first century;
An ability to recognize strengths and weaknesses of staff and the congregation and effectively motivate the Church based on that recognition;
A strong personal faith;
Spiritual maturity;
A joy in teaching and learning with a congregation;
Flexibility to adapt to new ideas and approaches to growth; and
A robust commitment to encouraging and initiating missional efforts in the congregation.
