Brief Church Mission Statement:
Always Loving, Serving, and Growing.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Amity lives out the vision of Glorifying Christ: Always Loving, Serving, and Growing by following the teachings of Jesus Christ through worship and prayer. We support our community in many outreach programs, such as quarterly meals at the Men’s Shelter. Amity participates in the annual CROP Walk. We support and care for the children in our community through our preschool which has been operational for over 60 years. We support our local elementary school through school supply drives and gifts at Christmas. Other outreach programs include providing transportation for Room in the Inn, a collaboration of smaller Presbyterian churches that provide shelter and food for the working poor; Samaritans’ Purse shoe boxes and Rise Against Hunger. We provide a home for Girl Scouts, NA and AA groups and neighborhood community groups. Our most recent outreach endeavor includes Project Harmony, which teaches children in disadvantaged situations to read music and play instruments.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Our church is in a wonderfully diverse neighborhood of Charlotte, NC. We are located very close to several elementary schools that serve a struggling population of students. We continue to work at embracing all people, be inclusive. We would like to utilize current technology in our publicity campaign: sharing events, activities, more outreach. We would like to try new things such as initiating bus ministry for church activities. We will continue to pray, participate, and be visible outside our church walls. We have taken steps in this direction with an Amity/Community Yard Sale. We continue to serve the needs of our community with the operation of our preschool, which serves our community, and to reach out to our preschool families and include them in the spiritual life of our church.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

A pastor who shares our vision will:

  • Nurture, guide, and help us discern pathways for reaching our full potential as a congregation.
  • He or she will be our teacher, our counselor, and a role model in bringing a positive enthusiasm to our faith journeys.
  • Our pastor will develop an active presence and involvement in the community, interacting with our neighbors and other leaders of our community.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

Amity is currently a traditional church of loving, friendly members who are looking for a dynamic person who relates to all ages and reaches out to the homebound. Our pastor needs to be a strong administrator, knowledgeable in the Bible and preaches thought-provoking sermons. Amity is a family of workers, knowledgeable of the Bible and history, who strive to make people feel welcome. We celebrate our aging congregation and love our choir’s music.   The intensity of the Holy Spirit is at work here. We seek an energetic, uplifting, spiritual person who is a “people person”. It is important we find someone who is willing to grow Amity, to cast a vision and be able to express and implement that vision.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
  • Teach and preach the word and administer the sacraments.
  • Strong administrative skills as head of staff.  Meet with staff at least once each month.
  • Provide administrative leadership to the Session and serve as moderator of the Session and congregational meetings.
  • Train newly-elected elders.
  • Lead and challenge the congregation toward new and innovative means of achieving goals and outreach opportunities.
  • Be visible in the fellowship life of the church.
  • Lead a short service for the preschool children every two (2) weeks.
