Brief Church Mission Statement:

The West End Presbyterian Church is a community of faith responding to God’s creativity and redeeming presence in Jesus Christ whose authority binds us together and frees us to live, serve, and die in God’s amazing grace.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

West End Presbyterian Church recently adopted a series of Core Values which will guide our vision for ministry in the future. We share faith in God’s promises and steadfast love – a faith that trusts in things unseen, giving us hope and strength and enabling us to take risks in ministry and in our life together as we are guided by God’s spirit.

We are hopeful for the years to come even as we are rooted in our Presbyterian heritage. Through our worship, we glorify God with singing, praying, giving thanks, listening to God’s word made relevant for our daily lives.  We take this with us as we go into the world to share the love of God.

We welcome all God’s children, young and old, encouraging all ages to explore a call to discipleship and to deepen our understanding of ourselves, our faith and the world in which we live.  We give special attention to nurturing the spiritual lives of our children and youth.

We engage and support our local community and global mission partners.  We share God’s love through action and service, bearing witness to God’s compassion and grace.

During a recent retreat for the members of our Session and Diaconate, group activities revealed three goals that our leadership shares for our congregation: continue to be a place of welcome; to expand our outreach within and beyond our community; and to connect our congregation through intergenerational activities.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Our congregation hears the call to be the hands and feet of Jesus. While we are engaged in acts of charity and service to those in need, we actively seek to discover new opportunities for ministry, mission, and service.  Our current missions include:

  • Missions:  Our sister church in Chetumal, MX; Rise Against Hunger; Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
  • Community:  Tuesday Tutoring; Rice Ministry for the Coalition Food Bank; Christmas for Moore; Family Promise; Backpack Pals; 2 cents a meal offering; Prayer Shawl; Trunk or Treat
  • Congregation: Presbyterian Women; Men’s Breakfast Group; Circle of Concern
  • Youth: Souper Bowl, Youth Mission Trips, Montreat Youth Conference; CROSS; Massanetta and Camp Monroe retreats
  • Children: Vacation Bible School; Change for Haiti; WEPC on Wednesday (WOW), an afterschool program providing children of our congregation and community an opportunity to grow spiritually and nurture their faith

As we seek to live out our Core Values of Community, Service, and Generosity, we desire to be a reflection of God’s beloved community:

  • Studying the needs of the marginalized in our community and beyond
  • Partnering with others in our community for service projects and interdenominational endeavors
  • Strengthening our relationships with the larger community
  • Exploring the needs of families in our community and listening for how we may support them
  • Expanding support for our local and global mission programs
  • Connecting the generations in outreach and fellowship
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We feel called to serve our congregation and the larger community with compelling opportunities for spiritual growth, intergenerational connection, and service. We are excited to welcome an Associate Pastor to collaborate with our excellent staff and dedicated volunteers and to expand our spiritual leadership.

The Associate Pastor will enable us to broaden our ministry to children, youth, and their families, building on a strong core of existing ministry. We envision an AP who will also enhance our intergenerational ties by developing opportunities for fellowship, education, and outreach together. Our Associate Pastor will help us develop our program leaders and volunteers by providing training and pastoral support.

He or She will work with our Pastor to implement all our Core Values, especially Community, Christian Education, Welcoming Children, and Service. As an additional voice from the pulpit we anticipate the Associate Pastor will bring a lively and approachable spirit to our worship.

The newest member of our staff will join a congregation of joyful givers. A recently completed capital campaign resulted in pledges of nearly $800,000 which were used to pay off existing debt, purchase a new van which is used for our Tuesday Tutoring and WOW programs, completely renovate our administration and Christian education wing, create a beautiful chapel/gathering space and convert a rundown former manse into a wonderful youth center.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

For our Associate Pastor, we are looking for an ordained Minister of the Word and Sacrament who is a living example of God’s love, forgiveness, mercy and grace. We want someone who shares the values of our congregation and is committed to helping us raise our children in the ways of love and peace.  We seek a person who is passionate about teaching and sharing God’s love with children and youth with an eye toward spiritual formation.  Our candidate will be a joyful leader who motivates discipleship in everyday action and character while displaying spiritual depth, maturity and wisdom.

Our Associate Pastor will be a theologian who is authentic and genuine and who emanates contagious faith to encourage lay and inter-church community in mission and Christian education efforts.  This individual will show respect for those who follow different paths in their quest for truth. We seek a candidate with the ability to bond with children, youth and their parents and to understand their needs at all levels of maturity. We will also look to this person for leadership as we seek to build our intergenerational ties.

Our goal is to find someone who celebrates our past and future and will serve as a spiritual guide to inspire our members to use their own gifts for ministry and service.

Ideally, our congregation is seeking someone with a heart for children and young people, the gifts and skills necessary to nurture Christian faith, and a deep sense of calling to this ministry.
