Brief Church Mission Statement:

“The Mission of the Waldensian Presbyterian Church is to serve God as disciples of Jesus Christ by promoting peace in the world, remaining hopeful and searching for joy in everything we do, and sharing God’s infinite love with our congregation, the community, and the world.”

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

We are called to be the light of Christ in an often dark world; to live out what God would have us do in the world. We are called to be a resource for those that would seek God. We do this through engaging and varied worship services, comprehensive music programs for all ages, Christian education for everyone, grace filled member care, fellowship opportunities throughout the week, and outreach through local, regional, state, national, and international missions.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
From the founding of Valdese by the Waldenses, WPC has endeavored to take the lead in our community in addressing the spiritual, physical, and recreational needs of our town, community, and world. Our outreach service seeks to include all age levels from our children to our older adults. We continually look at ways we can help the children of our community through various programs including the angel tree ministry, backpack ministry, and summer soccer camp. We also offer exciting programming activities for the children of our congregation and community throughout the year. Our Youth programs on Wednesday and Sunday target our own youth and those from the community who desire a safe space for Bible study and Christian fellowship. Additionally, the new playground offers a safe space for any family from our area. Mission Day serves our community by giving us the opportunity to help others with projects that are specifically targeted to assist those who are not part of our church membership. Our Community Assistance Ministry (food pantry) has a strong volunteer base and is well supported financially by our congregation. Furthermore, a number of church members volunteer in other non-profit ministries locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition to these ministries, the Missions Committee has developed a three-year partnership program of outreach, education, and support to help families move from crisis situations to a more sustainable future.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

The person(s) in this position would partner with other staff, church committees, and members of the congregation to serve the needs of our faith community and the larger community through worship, Christian education, member care, fellowship, missions, outreach, and service. She/he/they would collaborate with others in our family of faith to encourage active participation of all members, cultivate spiritual leadership in this community, expand opportunities for spiritual growth and nurture, promote member care, enhance the use of our facilities, and encourage participation in various mission opportunities. The person(s) would offer guidance, support, and encouragement to church staff and members as they participate in the life of the church.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
The person(s) called to this congregation should be an inspiring, relatable, and accessible preacher of the Word of God.  She/he/they should also be adaptable, knowledgeable of the Reformed tradition and the practices of the PC USA, open to learning more about the Waldensian history of our church, and act as a servant leader. The person(s) should possess a positive energy and can-do attitude, have the ability to work well with others, and model Christian love. She/he/they should be supportive of effective existing programs and encourage the exploration of new ideas. Finally, and very importantly, the person(s) should be able to listen, empathize, and provide counsel and comfort when necessary.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The person(s) will have multiple responsibilities including:

  • worship leadership and worship coordination with the Director of Music, Director of Christian Education, and Worship Committee
  • providing member care and collaborating with committees to prioritize homebound, long-term care, and hospitalized members
  • leading, collaborating, and communicating clearly with other staff members
  • moderating Session meetings and working effectively with the Clerk of Session

  • encouraging continued work of local and international missions
  • promoting congregational involvement in Christian education, fellowship, and service programming
  • supporting the spiritual development of members
  • providing pastoral counseling for members when needed
  • supporting outreach efforts to attract new members to our congregation
  • developing an appreciation of Waldensian heritage and following the practices of the Presbyterian denomination
  • other responsibilities as detailed in the job description
