Brief Church Mission Statement:
Reaching out in faith, hope, and love to serve God and our community
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

The mission of Gilwood Presbyterian Church is to reach out in faith, hope, and love to serve God and our community. Established in 1889, Gilwood is a traditional, conservative, family-oriented church. We are guided by the Holy Spirit, the Book of Confessions, and the Book of Order as we seek to do God’s will, to build up the Christian faith of our members, to strengthen our hope in the promise of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, and to demonstrate our faith by showing love to one another.

Our community is experiencing tremendous growth and has been transformed from its original rural setting with just a few extended families into a thriving suburban community on the outskirts of Charlotte. Over half of our current membership now consists of people who have moved to this region within the last 25 years. These changes have provided both opportunities and challenges for our church: we have the opportunity to really grow our church and bring more people to Christ, and we are challenged to find the right blend of traditional and contemporary worship styles that will appeal to both our senior members and our youth.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Gilwood feels called to use the strengths within our congregation to address needs within the community. Our membership includes various medical personnel, emergency personnel, artists, musicians, teachers, and mechanical technicians. These individuals use their skills and talents to serve the community. Our congregation collects food and serves at local food banks (CCM), schools, retirement centers, special needs events, raises money for multiple charities, and participates in mission related work (i.e. Gain, Young Life Mission Trips). Our congregation is comprised of many people who are willing to put forth the time and effort to help in any way needed.  The church feels led to reach out to the community by offering a Christ centered pre-school. Our church has conducted a very successful Vacation Bible School program each year in the summer for both kids and adults. The members of Gilwood are also willing to do fund raisers to help raise funds in an effort to help those with immediate needs. This church is a giving church that never shuns the call for help by people in the outside community or our congregation.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We pray that our Pastor would be a catalyst for innovation utilizing the talents from our multigenerational congregation to best serve Christ. We are receptive to change, but our traditional values make us want to take those bold steps with a well thought out and communicated plan as to why and how things should change. We pray for a pastor that will nurture our needs and desires to reach our neighbors and fellow Christians through communication and leadership. We need the guidance of a pastor to assist in fulfilling these desires to be a more fruitful congregation in the aspect of witnessing and being more present in our community. We seek a Pastor who will help us continue to expand our ministries and outreach into the community, use the strengths of our location and facilities, and follow Jesus’ teachings to serve our neighbors. We desire a Pastor to inspire action within the congregation, attract new members, and strengthen and nurture those in need.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

We seek an individual who has a vision for Gilwood Presbyterian Church and can communicate that vision.  This individual should be compassionate with strong leadership qualities and have a passion for Christian education and the youth of our church because this is where the Church's future lies.  We seek an individual who has a passion for the ministry of preaching, teaching and pastoral care that comes from a deep relationship with Jesus Christ.  He/she should possess a thorough understanding of scripture, the Book of Order and Book of Confessions in order to lead the congregation in the reformed Presbyterian traditions.  Because Gilwood places a high value on the role and authority of the Session, a cooperative and collaborative leadership style is critical for a good working relationship between the pastor and the Session.  We would expect the spouse and children, if any, to take an active part in the life of Gilwood.  An outgoing personality and sense of humor will be a great asset in dealing with the congregation.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

Our pastor will be expected to lead the church forward while respecting its past and traditions. He/she should be a spiritual leader and teacher for all ages, leading the church in a life and service that is biblically based, adhering to the Book of Order and Book of Confessions and guided by the Holy Spirit. As moderator of the session, our pastor should work to develop and train our elders as leaders seeking to do the will of Jesus Christ. He/she will need to ease us beyond our comfort zone and help us use our God-given talents in service to the Lord, helping us grow in our faith by providing educational and relevant sermons. Our pastor will plan and lead regular and special worship services that are meaningful and uplifting, blending both traditional and contemporary aspects of worship as appropriate. Ministering to the needs of our members in times of difficulty, he/she will visit the sick, troubled and bereaved in our midst, providing pastoral care, and conducting weekly chapel with the preschool.
