Brief Church Mission Statement:
Claimed by the One Triune God, we worship only God and are called by the Holy Spirit to share the boundary-breaking love of Christ in our life together, in the heart of Asheville, and in the whole world.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
FPCA warmly welcomes all. We honor and celebrate diversity and unity that God gives us in Christ. We believe differing perspectives, theological discussion and exploration enrich our spiritual growth paths.
Our vision is to be a community that: encounters God through dynamic worship; joins God in mission to serve the vulnerable; seeks diversity and celebrates the rich variety of God’s Creation; forms relationships marked by generous support and care.
The new ”Worship + 2” strategy is our guide for living into the vision, promoting that life in Christian community should be life-giving, not just one more thing to do.
This concept means: Worship plus 1) Breathe In, and 2) Breathe Out
“Worship” at church and in our daily lives, continually renews us in the good news of God’s grace and equips us to live faithfully. “Breathe In” encourages every member to participate in at least one activity that breathes in the love of God. “Breathe Out” encourages every member to participate in at least one activity that breathes out the love of God.
Our strategy is rooted in the balance of growing a healthy spiritual life of giving and receiving, while continually renewed in God’s faithful love. We seek to increase the momentum and rhythm of church life, particularly in education and fellowship, and rebuild the paradigm of interconnection. Intentional radical hospitality, deep relationships and shared ministry permeate our life together as we live into this vision.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
FPCA is a thriving downtown congregation that welcomes all who desire to join on the spiritual journey. It is this spirit of inclusivity which calls us to share the boundary breaking love of Christ locally and globally. As we aspire to encounter God through dynamic worship we seek diversity and rich relationships both internal and external to our congregation. Our core value of radical hospitality guides our “Worship +2” vision, enabling our growing congregation to “breathe in/ breathe out”.

“Breathing-in” includes opportunities for study, exploration, and dialogue such as Godly Play for children, small discussion groups and youth retreats. Members receive visitation, communion, grief care and practical help from our newly created Congregational Care Teams.  Fellowship such as women’s dinners, Bible studies and men’s breakfast occur regularly. We continue to seek creative ways to draw our members downtown to engage in our active church life throughout the week.

“Breathing-out” involves membership engagement in several outreach ministries such as Saturday Sanctuary, Pritchard Park, Room In The Inn, and Habitat for Humanity.
Increasingly finding both micro- and macro- opportunities for joining this work will serve to bring servant leadership to the young, time-constrained family and to the person looking to devote significant time. Bringing in new energy and eyes to some of our traditional partnerships is an untapped well.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
The Associate Pastor (AP) will be responsible for the theological implications of extending Sunday worship into daily life of the FPCA congregation. This position will invigorate directors and other key leaders by developing a vision for Christian formation at FPCA and creating innovative opportunities for the whole congregation.

With theological vision and direction the AP will:
-Attend to emerging spiritual needs in the congregation and community, with a special focus on educational needs at each age and stage of life and mission opportunities where the service or help of the church may make a positive difference.
-Develop and communicate a comprehensive program of opportunities and events for adult, youth, and children, that connects study, service, and fellowship.
-Inspire and guide lay leaders to participate in mission and social justice ministries through hands-on service.

While the key responsibility areas for this position are education, mission, and fellowship, they are not intended to be separate “silos” or isolated programs. The responsibilities of this position are rooted in a belief that Christian formation happens synergistically, when study, service, and Christian relationships are interlocking in a life of discipleship.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
Important characteristics for this position include an ability to:
-think theologically and articulate a clear theological perspective
-articulate a personal faith and commitment to Jesus Christ
-inspire, lead, and grow our life of mission
-be emotionally present with others, including providing pastoral care
-affirm the radically inclusive nature of God’s unconditional love

-create and sustain a positive managerial working relationship with supervisees
-recruit and train lay leadership
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
The AP will supervise and direct the work of the full-time Director of Christian Education and the part-time Director of Youth Ministry. The AP will also coordinate and oversee the Mission and Outreach efforts of the church community.
Additionally, the AP will:
-Provide and communicate theological vision and programmatic direction to the children and youth ministries.
