Called together by the Holy Spirit, Providence Presbyterian Church is a welcoming and inclusive community of faith committed to Jesus Christ and the Word of God as proclaimed in the Bible. Through worship, education and fellowship, we strive to use our myriad of gifts and resources to share God’s message of love, while enriching the spiritual growth of each individual and serving the needs of our diverse community and the world.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

We like the idea that a church is the body of Christ in a specific location. Specifically, all of our differences (in ethnicity, culture, ability, financial means, theological and academic backgrounds, season of life, politics, sexuality, family situation, you-name-it) are a gift with a purpose. We know that we need to stay grounded in Jesus’ love through worship, prayer, and fellowship and this will help unify us. We want good relationships, learning from and enjoying each other in ways that lead to spiritual growth, discovering how to use our gifts with love. Ultimately, we want God’s work in us to overflow generously into our community and to those in need through our lives, vocations, activities, finances, and time.

Our church neighborhood is diverse with areas of wealth and poverty, long and short-term residents, universities and food pantries. This diversity is reflected in our members and the many visitors that journey with us for varying lengths of time. We incorporate a variety of activities, musical styles, ways of worshiping, and expressions of faith into the life of our church to meet the needs of as many people as possible. Covid-19 interrupted most of these activities and the demographics of our attendees changed markedly with a switch to virtual worship. As we begin the transition back to in-person activities, the congregation is hopeful that we will emerge from the pandemic with new ideas, skills, energy, and enthusiasm for building Christian community.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Our world needs inclusive Christian communities where belonging and shared focus on the Gospel can unite diverse and sometimes divided neighbors. We feel called to create such a community in our own church through vibrant, inclusive, multicultural worship services, a hopeful spirit grounded in Christ’s love, communal prayer, welcoming hospitality, attentiveness to the needs of people of all ages and walks of life, and a variety of activities that provide opportunities to build relationships with Christ, with each other, and with our broader community. 

We also feel called to respond to the needs of our marginalized neighbors. Our approach has not been to identify a target area of intense focus, rather, we use the connections and callings within our congregation to respond to a variety of needs as they arise. Examples include outreach to refugee families, a support group for new mothers, solidarity with stigmatized groups, work with a food pantry in our church’s immediate neighborhood, self-education about systemic racism, and opening our church building for local support groups to meet. Each of these activities has broadened our relationships with our neighbors and brought new people into our church community.     

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We seek a pastor who brings loving energy, collaborative leadership, holy wisdom, and a stable presence for worship, preaching, pastoral care, and community building. Each of these things is crucial for our vision of building a vibrant, multicultural, Christian community. We resonate with inclusive, Biblically-grounded preaching that emphasizes our shared identity in Christ while incorporating a variety of perspectives and approaches. We’d love to call a pastor who feels called to engage broadly in the basics of pastoring: care within our congregation and community, modeling Christian discipleship, drawing new members into fellowship, attending to spiritual needs, and administering the Sacraments. 

We are hoping for a pastor who has the awareness and perspective to create connections between different parts of our church community, such as, bringing the financial struggles of a member to the attention of the Deacons, or connecting a visiting college student to other students and faculty members in the congregation, or encouraging someone to engage in youth ministry, or facilitating healing and reconciliation where there may be wounds, or identifying different worship traditions within our community and incorporating them into our worship services for variety and inclusiveness. We seek a pastor who enjoys and prioritizes this type of pastoral care and community-building and can get involved in the life of our church in this intimate way.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

We think our church needs a pastor who is Christ-centered, faithful, energetic, and with a gift and vision for building warm, authentic relationships. This would involve basic skills like taking interest, taking initiative, asking good questions, and listening carefully; someone young at heart who enjoys people, takes time to know them, and has a vision for bringing them together so they can discover and share their gifts. It’s essential for this person to be faithfully grounded in Jesus themselves so that they can be authentic and honest, able to engage with various aspects of church life, and able to lead by example from a secure place. A pastor is likely to flourish here if they have a joyful spirit, know their own calling and gifts, can see God at work in the small things, and have a vision for how the hospitality, love, and faithfulness of a small Christian community can transform people’s lives. It is essential that our pastor be inclusive of all people, comfortable in multicultural communities, value even the smallest of gifts, and have the ability to attract new and diverse members. We prefer someone who takes a collaborative approach to leadership and problem-solving. We recognize that we are in transition and there are unknowns and challenges ahead. We hope to take some risks together to love each other more deeply and to connect in new ways both within and outside of our church community. 

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The Pastor will plan and lead worship services (in partnership with the Worship Committee), preach, and administer Sacraments (including home communion). The Pastor will also support, guide, and collaborate with Session to fulfill the Church’s mission and ensure its day-to-day functioning. The Pastor will take a lead role in pastoral care (in partnership with the Deacons), including visitation, spiritual guidance, nurturing faith, and responding to crises. We hope that the Pastor will help us develop new leadership and implement new programming for youth and families, both to serve our current members and to attract the next generation of disciples. We expect that our church will need to take some risks to successfully re-emerge from the pandemic, and we hope to find a pastor who can encourage this faithful risk taking. More generally, our expectation is that the Pastor will participate broadly in the life of the church, adjust his or her activities over time to complement the strengths and needs of the people, and strive to grow the church both in the size of the congregation and in the depth of its love for Christ Jesus.
