God calls Presby (as we are commonly known) to live by faith in Jesus Christ, share His love and bring hope to the world so others will know the life found in Jesus Christ. This is the mission of Presby, our reason for existence – that just as we have experienced His grace and love, others will also become reconciled to God, come to know Christ, receive life in the Spirit and become faithful followers of the Lord. This informs how we should then live:

-Worship Together: Celebrating, proclaiming and responding to Jesus Christ

-Equipping: Lifelong education for mission and ministry

-Fellowship: Experiencing life together and caring for one another

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Our vision at Japanese Presbyterian Church (Presby) is to be a Christ-Centered church that proclaims God’s love for the world so others will know the life found in Jesus Christ.

Founded 115 years ago to reach out to Japanese speaking immigrants, our congregation is now predominantly English speaking while continuing to have a Japanese speaking ministry. Our Asian heritage is a prominent feature of our identity even as we welcome becoming a more culturally and ethnically diverse church. We share God’s love and empathy for those in need, for the children and the elderly, caring for each person with intention. People find opportunities to serve with generosity and humility in lay leadership, worship, teaching, music, and congregational care. We are a diverse community of faith that desires to be united in Christ as we have genuine interactions over differing cultural and theological perspectives.

As a commuter congregation, the church serves as the hub for ministry and connections. We seek to discern God’s plan for us to be a presence in our growing neighborhood and in support of inner-city ministries and global missions. The Japanese speaking ministry, with our bilingual pastor and lay leadership, connects with families, students and business workers through worship services, personal discipleship, support groups and regional conferences. As one congregation, we seek personal interactions that will strengthen the relationship between Japanese and English speaking ministries.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

The local neighborhood around the Presby church building is changing rapidly with new development and residences being built. Our challenge as a commuter church is how to be a light and have personal relationships with our church neighbors.

Presby’s character of strong inter-generational worship and participation could appeal to many young families and couples that are moving into the area. We seek to welcome and enfold those that will become, truly, “our neighbors” to love. Though our name may suggest otherwise, we seek to welcome all who want to know Jesus, regardless of the ethnic group they may identify with. At the same time, we realize that our predominantly Asian American congregation may appeal to those who have not experienced an Asian American Christian community.

We seek to welcome and enfold all of God’s children, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Presby values our elderly and we want to serve them well. We also seek to strengthen our ministry to post-college young adults/singles and engage them into the life of the church.

Many young Christians, singles and families from Japan are moving to the Seattle area and seeking a church. We want Presby to be a safe and welcoming place for them to fellowship and be in community with other believers with ties to Japan.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

This position plays an essential role in reaching our vision and goals in multiple ways. Presby values our unique characteristics including our history, our location, and the variety of identities that make up our church body; we embrace these as ways to expand and deepen our knowledge of who God is and how to experience and share God’s love with others.

We are seeking a leader that is willing to grow and learn with us as we continue to reimagine what it looks like to be a good neighbor to our diverse community in Seattle. We hope that our pastor will also provide compassionate guidance, to counsel, and to motivate us as we strive towards being a more inclusive and welcoming church body. Presby also values our multigenerational nature, and hopes that our pastor will support and nurture the spiritual growth of all ages; we hope that our pastor will also encourage involvement and collaboration of the generations.  We seek to strengthen the connection between the English and Japanese speaking ministries. Presby centers itself on servant leadership, so we hope that our pastor will serve alongside us when possible, and provide direction to the various teams and committees.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

Presby is seeking a highly relational and spiritually mature senior pastor who is gifted as a strong communicator and is skilled at engaging and holding sacred space for a congregation that represents a breadth of cultural and theological experiences and views. Presby’s congregation has deep roots and history in the context of the Japanese-American experience, and with our members now encompassing a wide range of Asian-American and other cultural identities, a leader with strong cross-cultural competence and strong cultural self-awareness is desired.

This candidate will be joining a team of servant leaders who take a truly collaborative and non-hierarchical approach in their ministry, and who seek to draw out the many spiritual gifts and lay leadership present in the congregation.

As Presby experiences changes both within the church as well as in the surrounding community and seeks to discern God’s ongoing vision for the church body, we seek a candidate who can hold and embody hopefulness and a forward-looking vision, encouraging collaboration and utilizing strong organizational and management skills. As a highly community-centered church, Presby hopes for a leader who can continue to build bridges, promote constructive communication, and hold us together in our shared love of and commitment to Christ and desire to grow together in our faith.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

Primary responsibilities:

-Have a vibrant and growing spiritual life that is the basis for shepherding and feeding others.

-Nurture the spiritual development and growth of our multicultural and multigenerational congregation through biblically based sermons, Bible studies, church school classes.

-Oversee the planning of worship services and preach. Coordinate preaching team. Presby values intergenerational learning/participation.

-Plan and moderate Session and congregational meetings. Provide leadership and encouragement to elders, deacons, ministry council and other committees of the church.

-Supervise and mentor 2 Associate Pastors in respective ministry areas.

-Serve as Head of staff and provide administrative leadership, including stewardship of the church building and finances.

-Congregational care - pastoral visits to those that need spiritual encouragement.

-In a post COVID era, promote re-establishment of relationships and fellowship with regular church attendance. There may be other areas of healing and renewal that are yet to be seen.

-Continue to lead loving, Christ-centered conversations as we wrestle with different views of the Bible and the world and their impact on our understanding of issues such as sexuality.

-Encourage Presby in ministry and mission where the Spirit is leading in our neighborhood, city and around the world.

-Administer the sacraments, officiate at weddings and memorial services as requested.

-Represent the church to outside organizations and Presbytery.
