What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Our mission statement comes from an extensive visioning process completed in 2016 and reads “Seeking Christ and serving others, until all things are made new”. Our core values are resilient faithfulness, empowerment of kids, and joy in service and worship. We commit to listening to each other, desiring genuine understanding, while dedicating our time and talents to glorify God in our mission.

We are committed to the spiritual growth of our children and families and in the post pandemic period we will discern which previous activities can and should be resumed. 

In order to maximize participation and outreach during COVID 19, we live-streamed worship services and made use of virtual presentations including vocal and virtual choirs, provided Zoom meetings for both youth and adults and held outdoor activities practicing social distancing guidelines.

In addition, we partnered with the local YMCA to provide remote learning space in our church facility for students with working parents making necessary safety and wifi upgrades to facilitate this.

We strive to meet all congregants' needs during this time of isolation; through regular phone calls, cards and personal visits by our dedicated leaders and staff, as we share Jesus’ love beyond our walls.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Our congregation approaches the socioeconomic needs of the community by participation in Church Response, Habitat for Humanity, Love INC, and had provided food bags for homeless that came to our door. We assist people in finding appropriate social service resources. 

Rapid City has a large single parent and working family population which is often in need of childcare. To meet this need, we instituted the ‘Walkabout’ program which provides free Christ-centered daycare for elementary aged children during teacher in-service days. 

Our community and congregation demographic include a large senior population. West Hills Village, a retirement village and nursing home near our church was established in 1984 with the assistance of several of our members. First Presbyterian Church continues to have close ties with the facility. We provide transportation for senior members to participate in worship services and activities. Group activities and bible studies have often been held there.

Prior to the pandemic; a connections committee improved our communication between visitors, congregants, leaders and staff .“Connection Cards” provide a weekly opportunity to communicate with members, new visitors, address prayer requests, special needs, and convey volunteer opportunities. We will resume this activity when safe to do so.

A positive ‘side effect’ of this pandemic has been the popularity of our Adult Ed program on Sunday’s called The Wired Word which is available both on line and in person.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We believe the pastor/head of staff called to our congregation will help motivate and inspire us in faithful service to God, while partnering with us, providing leadership and guidance.  We recognize that there is an opportunity in our community and congregation for spiritual growth and the strong spiritual leadership that a pastor brings will fortify our Christian education and ministry, as we seek Christ together.  We look forward to a pastor helping our Deacons, Elders and Ministries walk together in fulfillment of our goal of serving others.  

Covid-19 prompted a need at FPC to provide online streaming of worship services and a higher computer/media focus. A pastor with proficiency in this area would help us continue to advance the goals of meeting needs when congregants cannot participate in person and providing outreach beyond our walls.  

In the post-pandemic world, we look forward to a pastor’s guidance as we meet emerging needs of both our congregation and the greater community.  We see growth in our community which brings new opportunities for shining Christ’s light during and after this time of isolation.

We seek an authentic worship leader and teacher with strong spiritual maturity to inspire our congregation to greater spiritual growth and enhanced service.

We seek an effective collaborator who can work with our session, deacons, staff and committees. We welcome fresh energy and different perspectives as we seek to fulfill our mission.

We are looking for a person with compassion for our senior population. We are seeking a pastor who is culturally proficient who can help us serve the vulnerable populations in our downtown area.

We are seeking an effective communicator and bridge builder with excellent networking skills. This will help us connect with the downtown population, area businesses and the nearby SD School of Mines. Administrative experience would be helpful as well.

 We hope to find a person who appreciates the natural beauty of the Black Hills and all it has to offer. Please refrain from applying if you dislike clean air, minimal traffic problems, beautiful scenery and friendly people.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The person called to this congregation will have the responsibility of Pastoral, Administrative and Leadership Roles accountable to The Presbytery and the congregation through the session.

1) Shall hold membership in Presbytery of SD, Synod of Lakes and Prairies

2) Shall serve as Head of staff of the church; oversee/manage staff in consultation with session HR  committee and attend weekly staff meetings. Communicate staffing issues, needs to session HR committee.

 3) To preach the word of God, lead weekly worship, read and teach the Scriptures and communicate    with worship committee/staff/music ministry

4) To provide active leadership to session as moderator and attend monthly meetings and guide session to fulfill vision, maintain and develop programing according to stated Core values and visioning

5) Pastoral care/officiate for funerals, memorials services for congregation members and family

6) Officiate at weddings and provide pre-marital counseling

7)Visitation of sick and those congregants in need and communicate with Deacons on continued visitation needs

8) To counsel families and individuals of the church and refer people to professional counselors as needed

9) Plan/assist with bible study, new member and leadership training classes

10) To administer the sacraments of baptism and The Lords Supper

11) To be involved in ecumenical relationships in the community and be the public face of First Presbyterian Church of Rapid City
