Brief Church Mission Statement:
The mission of the First Presbyterian Church of Sunbury is to glorify God by acknowledging Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and  to witness for Christ by proclaiming His Gospel to all people by word and deed. Our mission is empowered by the Holy Spirit and is expressed in worship, prayer, study, fellowship and service.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

First Presbyterian Church of Sunbury is a family of faith that strives to carry the love and light of Christ beyond our church walls. Our central location places us in close proximity to many of our community neighbors as well as to the town park that we are able to use for various church activities. We believe that the purpose of our church is to do God's work with our own hands and feet in order to meet the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of our congregation and community. Our vision is lived out through our worship and Sunday schools, a soup kitchen - Elijah's Bowl, special holiday activities that attract community members, the ministry of the church's Deacons, opening our doors to other organizations for their activities and by participating in community activities such as National Night Out. At least that has been our vision over the past several years. But...we want more. We want a vibrant church overflowing with people of all ages and filled with music. We want a church that is really serving its community and sharing the love of Christ. Part time ministry and decreasing membership are limiting. We want more. We feel that God wants more from us and we need someone to help us create that new vision. We have been blessed with an endowment that has kept us afloat and would last another 3 to 5 years with a full time minister. Are you up to the challenge God has put before us? Are you willing to take this leap of faith with us?

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

The central location of First Presbyterian Church of Sunbury provides an ideal setting for community outreach to a city that is becoming more diverse with increasing needs and struggles. Our welcoming attitude to all enables our congregation to help meet those ever increasing needs. We are also called to continue to be there for our members and friends as our congregation ages. A fulltime pastor will give us a resource to help us determine how best to use all of our assets to meet the needs of the community despite our decreasing membership.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

First Presbyterian Church of Sunbury has been without a fulltime permanent pastor for quite some time. In order to help us move towards positive growth and successful achievement of our vision and mission goals it is imperative that we have a pastor who is able to move us towards that growth and success. It will be important that the person called to this position can meet our congregation where we are, make an effort to understand our struggles and our desire for healing, and instill a hope in us that this is possible. We are in need of someone who can challenge us, guide us, motivate us and equip us with the abilities to work together and look toward the future. It will be important that he/she can think outside the box and is imaginative, energetic and enthusiastic. We need to be led by an example of a Christ based life that will ease our fears, encourage our hope, and help us to develop the abilities needed for church growth and to move into a fulfilling future.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

The pastor who is called to this congregation must be passionate for Christ with strong biblically based preaching and teaching. We need someone who is inspirational, a motivator, a counselor, and a collaborator. He/she will need to be friendly, compassionate and easy to talk to. It will also be important for this pastor to show enthusiasm for the tasks at hand, be outgoing and willing to take risks. Organizational skills are essential. Also needed is an ability to communicate in a culturally competent way in order to minister to a variety of persons and their needs.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The person called as pastor will be responsible for the following:

He/she will lead and create worship so that it contributes to our spiritual development and calls us to praise the Head of the church and to be his hands and feet. The pastor will be a shepherd, caring for us, encouraging us, and guiding us in spiritual maturity. Pastoral care will include counseling, hospital and home visits, officiating at funerals, weddings, baptisms and confirmations and conducting new member classes. Christian education is an important component of the needs of our church that includes Sunday school, Bible studies, and the development of a youth program. It will be important for the new pastor to supervise church staff and update both our Facebook page and website. Community outreach responsibilities will be needed to help us develop strong relationships with members of our community.

We understand that the pastor is not responsible for all these duties. These tasks will be shared with Session, Deacons and our entire congregation. Our congregation knows that we must work together if we are to have a future. There is no other choice if we want to become the church that God wants us to be.
