Brief Church Mission Statement:

Led by the Spirit, we as a worshiping body of Christ, discern God’s will so as to participate in God’s mission at home, in our neighborhood and wherever He sends us in the world.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Our congregation desires consistent pastoral leadership from a pastor who is committed to serving God, feels called to this congregation, possesses excellent interpersonal skills and has the knowledge and abilities to help lead us into God’s future.

Our congregation desires a deeper understanding of what it means to be missional. We desire a pastor who is able to fill that need as we partner with God in His mission. We continue to provide missional opportunities to the community such as Open Door Café; and will continue to look for new opportunities.

Our congregation has many beautiful examples of how it has and does reach out to the community, but we recognize there is more we could be doing. We desire to be a place where all of its members feel loved, cared for, and appreciated. We also want to be known as a welcoming, caring, and hospitable congregation. For now we will continue to explore what our hospitality and accessibility issues are.

We are looking for opportunities and leadership to help us gain a deeper theological understanding of what stewardship is and how it plays a role in our participation in the Body of Christ. We will soon invite a representative from the Presbyterian Foundation to discuss resources and programs to strengthen our understanding of stewardship.

As a congregation, we want to discover the pastor that God has in mind for us, a pastor who will walk BESIDE us and strengthen our resolve in God’s mission.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
As Second Presbyterian Church, Oil City revealed in our most recent mission study, we want to continue to be and grow as a local missional church. We as a church, feel called to work with the Venango county area, but specifically local neighborhoods and to support and share Jesus’s love with the residents living there. We as a church, feel that this begins by making the ‘unchurched’ people feel welcome worshiping and thriving with our congregation. In years past, we have taken Sunday’s ‘off’ from traditional worship and have gone into the local neighborhoods and completed needed projects on individual homes, calling this Love’s Detour. These experiences were outreaches to the community members, working with them to each experience God’s love. Because of a large low-income population in Venango County, there is great need for monetary, spiritual, and hopefulness sharing. Our mission study made us look from within and understand the need for a refocus of who our church ministers to, and how our community needs us more than ever, in a different way than the past 100 years. Our outreach needs to be somewhat different than in the past understanding how our local economy, demographics, and views have changed over the last 30 years. We need to meet people where they are in their walk with God in order to involve many in our local community.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

Growing in our understanding of what it means to be a Missional Church.

In order to help us along this missional path, we will be seeking a called and installed pastor who possesses a deep and sophisticated understanding of what it means to be missional. We request a pastor who is able to instruct and educate us, so that as a congregation we might take the lead as we seek to partner with God in His mission for the world.

Connecting to and serving with our local community.

We seek a deeper understanding of what it means to be a “neighbor”. One that will help us to connect with and identify the needs of this community-not based on what we think they need, but based on what                is discovered through meaningful and respectful engagement and relationships with them.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

Second Church is looking for a pastor to walk with us as we continue to grow in faith. We hope to find someone that feels called to this church, this congregation, and this community. Someone dedicated to joining us and feels that this is where God wants them to be.

We would like someone that is able to deliver an interesting and thoughtful sermon, including their own experiences and faith stories. Being knowledgeable but humble, and able to have a good laugh are important. This will allow an honest, open, and approachable connection between the pastor and the congregation and community.

Our church is seeking a compassionate leader that is able to visit those who are sick, mourning, or in need. We have many older members in our congregation that necessitate the willingness to meet these obligations.  We would also like someone with a passion to involve and grow the younger demographic of our church. The ability to reach out to those in our congregation as well as those in our community with openness and hospitality is desirable.

Communication is vital. The ability to listen, organize, and motivate are significant characteristics. We are an active group with many talented and dedicated members that need a leader to help oversee that everyone is meeting the potential that God has in store for them. We all need to show a deep love for God in our words and actions.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

Guided by Christ, the individual joining us as the minister of 2nd Church will be the central figure in the family and spiritual life of our church. This individual must be real with us. They will provide a biblically based preaching and teaching ministry that will appeal to and challenge the congregation. Connection with our community, building relationships, and providing hospital, nursing home and home visits will be required.

This person will administer the church’s programs by leading, directing, and supervising all staff members.  Also, it includes leading and inspiring the Session in developing a wide range of programs and outreach within the congregation and the community, and motivating and training youth and adult leaders. One should be acquainted with all areas of church activities, but will not be required to lead every one of them. This will require relating to all age groups, respecting the congregation, and being available. It is important to understand, help maintain, and support the program of activities including the church school, youth program, and all other groups involved in the welfare of the church. This will also entail bringing new ideas into our church and remaining committed regardless of success. The pastor will be a part of activities including Bible study, our Sunday school program, and the Friday Men’s Prayer Breakfasts, the Open Door and the local ministerium.

In all areas, the pastor should use discernment and honor for Christ’s blessing.
