Brief Church Mission Statement:

We seek to become a Christian people of Spiritual Vitality and Faithfulness embraced by the love of God in Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, as we love God and our neighbors, near and far.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Our people are our strength as we are family, held together by God's love and grace

  • We are a praying people - we: have a prayer chain; offer a prayer room for those who need quiet place to pray; have had prayer groups; offer Deeper Level Prayer and Healing, weekly; hosted regional seminar "Praying Jesus Way", led by a national consultant
  • We have a large amazing sanctuary with excellent acoustics
  • We are a music loving church backed by a powerful pipe organ along with a very gifted organist
  • Like many congregations we are plateaued and pray for a growth spurt. Are you the one to lead us?

  • We are centrally located in historic downtown Johnstown
  • Ours is the oldest established active church in Johnstown- 190+ years of prayer, faith & service
  • We are rooted in the past, reaching for the future
  • The church is there for those in need, be it physical (financial) or spiritual, we are able to offer assistance
  • The Johnstown region has some of the most affordable housing in America
  • Some of amenities include 14 State Parks (with 1431 campsites), 41 trails for mountain biking, 4 Ski Resorts and 247 miles of Class A trout water in the region
  • A high quality of life and low cost of living make the Johnstown region the perfect place to live
  • Johnstown is consistently rated in the top three safest US metro areas of our size for crime, though we pray about the opioid crisis that almost all areas face
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

We are not only active within our walls but reach out into the community. There is so much need and opportunity to serve Christ in this community

  • Our Deacons reach out to those in need at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Cards are also sent to the homebound monthly, with small gifts at Christmas and Easter. An Easter Egg Tree is sponsored in support of children in need
  • We actively seek to tithe a percentage of all that God has blessed us with to both mission endeavors as well as community needs through our Endowment Foundation and Endowment Committee. We have helped 116 community needs since 2012. We take our tithing very seriously.
  • We have participated in drug & alcohol abuse outreach
  • We host a traditional Thanksgiving dinner each year for those in the congregation and community who have no place to go
  • Outreach is offered through concerts open to the community by numerous groups, plus the sponsored Johnstown Concert Series
  • We host Jazz In Your Face band each New Year's Eve as part of the Celebration Johnstown event.
  • Prior to the pandemic shutdown, we held an annual Block Party for local children that included food, crafts & entertainment and hope to continue to host again soon
  • Our Spirit Gift to the Community for over 39 years is the annual Festival of the Nativity where hundreds of images of the Christ child in crèches and artwork are displayed throughout the chapel and parlor while musical presentations are made in the Sanctuary by local individuals, church and school choirs and bands
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We are the body of Christ seeking to move our arms, hands and feet to spread the love of Jesus

  • 1st Johnstown is a surviving church, through God's grace, continuing to pull ourselves out of the mud & ashes.  We believe in miracles!  Do you?
  • We love to eat!  We hope you do as well, as many of our programs revolve around food & fellowship
  • We are a downtown church which seems to be a detriment to some, but could be a positive.   There seems to be a stigma attached that we need to overcome.  The local city and the Chamber of Commerce are starting to see progress in the growth of the downtown area.  There are many areas that we can reach out into and share God's love and His word.  We are the heart of the faith in the heart of the city
  • Do you have some fresh ideas you'd love to share?  We're open to new ideas and need just the right person to share in that vision
  • There is much need & opportunity in this community: financial, spiritual & public service.  We want to become the light in the darkness
  • We are located in a growing area that has a history of being known for its floods
  • The region boasts 21 museums & cultural centers
  • There are 11 universities & colleges in the region
  • There are 28 music venues in the region consisting of jazz, country and rock
