Brief Church Mission Statement:

  • We worship Jesus Christ openly, spiritually and completely
  • We nourish Christian faith through spiritual education
  • We affirm faith by our Christian works
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
Our vision for ministry is stated in our Mission Statement – “We welcome, we worship, we nourish, we affirm.” We would like pastoral leadership to guide us in this goal.
  • This vision is lived out by maintaining and growing God’s word through Bible studies, Sunday School for all ages, youth ministry, and other activities.
  • Networking with ministerial association and other community groups.
  • Continuing our missions and community kitchen program.
  • Recruiting and fostering volunteers for church and community activities.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
Jesus asks us to seek the lost and love them into His body of believers. Some emerging concerns and needs in our community that we hope to address in the coming years are reaching out to homeless/struggling neighbors, expanding use of church facilities, networking in community, care for congregational needs and growing our church family through outreach. One idea to expand the use of church facilities could be to once again offer a preschool to the community. We have classroom space and a fenced yard to do this. Hopefully some young mother teachers and/or volunteers could lead in this new ministry. We also hope to offer various group events to all age groups like Family Movie Night, Game Night, and perhaps even Worship Night. We already take a weekly turn with other churches offering free lunches to our homeless or needy neighbors on Thursdays.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
As a church in transition, we are seeking a pastor who can help us clarify and strengthen our mission and ministry goals. We recognize that the world is changing rapidly, and we would like someone to help us evaluate where our energies are and how we can best use them to enhance our ministry together in this new day. We need a “head shepherd” to lead and encourage us, watch over this flock, and use his/her God-given gifts to expand it. With our “head shepherd” in place, it would be our hope that he/she can help us to find ways to reach out to families to offer them Sunday School classes and youth groups for instruction of their family members in the ways of our Lord Jesus Christ. Properly motivated and pastor trained teachers would be encouraged to even find fun ways to accomplish this goal. We of course would have a budget to buy the needed curricular supplies and materials. Perhaps we can once again offer VBS and other programs by motivated adults using their God-given gifts to teach crafts, direct children’s choirs, and even direct theater productions since the church has a real stage with a curtain!
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
We desire a strong, outgoing, spirit-filled believer, with a solid biblical knowledge who can relate and love people of all ages and interests. A candidate with these character traits would hopefully seek out people in the various age and interest groups and look for ways to relate and bond with them. Perhaps “small group ministries” either on site or in homes can be established. We especially hope our new spiritual leader will want to launch programs that would attract some younger families to join us in our mostly older congregation. They would be very much welcomed!   We also want to establish the right expectations with the right person – we could envision and support a pastor serving at ¾ time now, but would hope to eventually be able to offer a full time position with a longer timeline depending on the needs, interests, and capabilities of the pastor and how God blesses our ministry together.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
A pastor should be able to organize and lead worship services; be able to communicate thoughtful scripture-based sermons. Also, he/she can perform special services for baptism, confirmation, communion, marriage, and memorials. In addition, we hope for guidance through attending our committee meetings and a willingness to represent our church in the community. We certainly don’t want to ever over work our pastor. So arranging for study time, study leave, and free time to enjoy family and the beautiful resources here on the coast will be lovingly offered. Members here will likely invite our new pastor to go fishing, sailing, hiking on the many trails, and hunting if interested. Some of the other blessings Brookings Presbyterian has going for it include: Our building remodel is complete. We paid off our loans and owe nothing to any financial institution! We have wonderful volunteers who help decorate the church, provide after worship treats and special meals from time to time and sing in our choir. There is an active ladies’ Bible Study group and also a men’s Bible Study group that meets weekly year round. Besides all this, this beautiful coastal community has the best climate in Oregon if you don’t like being too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter. In short you would be a “Pastor in Paradise.”
