Brief Church Mission Statement:

As members of the White Church on the Hill, a beacon of God’s light and love, we are God’s faithful disciples, and

  • Joyfully invite all people to join us on the journey; affirming our differences, valuing the uniqueness of each, and respecting the traditions we bring
  • Embrace others with the certain knowledge of God’s abundant and overflowing love
  • Eagerly share God’s compassion through service to all people in our congregation, our community and our world
  • Support, encourage, and deepen our spiritual growth which enables us to personally experience the grace of God for the first time or over again
  • Commit ourselves to the Christian education of children, youth, and adults;
  • Explore God’s Word with excitement, share the Word with energy, and actively and vigorously live the Word each and every day
  • Truly love one another as Christ taught us, so that the love of God cascades through us, between us, among us
  • Live as God’s faithful disciples, and thereby inspire others to be disciples in the world, and to walk with us as we discover God’s grace and glory
  • Gloriously transform ourselves and our world by celebrating the power of God’s love and forgiveness, and to radiate that love and forgiveness out over the world, just as the light of the South Salem Presbyterian Church shines over this community we serve.

In addition, under the leadership of our past pastor, we have participated in weekly communion following the new liturgy provided for in the revised Book of Common Worship.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Located in bucolic northern Westchester county, SSPC occupies the center of the hamlet of South Salem, where it has been since the late 1700’s. Our town is more a country retreat then a commuter suburb, but some do commute to Manhattan. Although we are in an area noted for horse farms and large estates, our church is not financially wealthy; our wealth is in our position as a physical and spiritual gathering point for the community. Our ongoing mission is to continue to provide our community with that center, to bring it together around both spiritual and secular events across lines of age, race, finances, and tenure in the community. We also aim to be of service to the vulnerable and needy in our community, joining with other groups to provide important services.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

We host and participate in many community events, including the Memorial Day Fair and Races, which have been a part of our community for 43 years, and coordinate with the Town's Memorial Day Parade; The Chili Cook-Off, which has drawn community members into the Church; The Great Valentine's Day Chocolate Challenge, which has also brought community members into the Church; and The Christmas Cookie Walk. The mission committee supports local charities A-Home (an organization providing housing and services mostly to disabled adults), and the Community Center of Northern Westchester (providing food and clothing to the economically challenged members of the Northern Westchester community). Several members of our congregation and our pastor also established The Sanctuary Series, which brings world-renowned classical musicians into the community, and which has successfully drawn people from the community into the Church. We also share our space with other community organizations, such as the Boy Scouts, Alcoholics Anonymous, CSA farm share (providing food to members of the farm share, and providing excess to the Northern Westchester Community Center), an Actor’s Studio, a Musical Recital Group, and a choral organization, Camarada D’Amici, among others. A few years ago our local library needed temporary space and we worked with the library to make it available at the church for the library's use. For 50 years we have also had a nursery school sharing our building.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We hope that our response to question number 2 makes it clear that SSPC is heavily committed to being community-based. We are financially challenged and we need an outgoing, energetic and charismatic pastor to continue to lead us in our efforts with visionary

ideas that will help us grow both in membership and in financial health. Both in the community and in our own services music is an essential component, and we require that our new pastor appreciate the power of music as a part of SSPC's efforts to inspire, to heal, and to maintain spirituality.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

Our goal is to find and call to this position a pastor who is compassionate, who is an effective and exciting preacher and worship leader, who is an excellent and empathetic communicator capable of fostering interpersonal engagement with a wide variety of people, who has entrepreneurial vision, and who has the ability to serve as a strategist and financial manager for our future; the appropriate candidate will be a collaborator, a bridge builder, and an enthusiastic motivator.

We are a congregation that is not in conflict. We have an opening because our minister died while in service (from cancer), the first time this has happened in our 266 year history.

We are also a congregation with political, religious and socio-economic diversity. We enjoy sermons that lead us in our knowledge of God, give us insight into the lectionary reading of the day and help us with our daily striving, recognizing that we each have different points of views and gifts.

We refer to ourselves as a “singing church” and are looking for a pastor who would enjoy collaborating with Mary Jane Newman, our Minister of Music, bringing music into our worship. We love to sing hymns, sometimes four or more per service, and often incorporate the piano, organ, trumpet, violin and flute.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

Our pastor will have responsibility for worship, primarily on Sundays but also as needed during the church year, including conducting baptisms, weddings, and funerals as needed; the pastor will undertake pastoral care, not only for church members but also possibly for members of the greater South Salem community; this last responsibility dovetails with the need for the pastor to engage in community service and outreach; the pastor will guide others to lead adult spiritual education and support our Christian education, including guiding others in preparation for the confirmation classes for our youth.
