We strive to live out our mission statement both inside and outside our walls.

  • We celebrate our diversity and encourage fellowship among members.
  • We are challenged and inspired by thoughtful and powerful worship.
  • We support creative children’s and youth ministry programs. We hope to teach the next generation about faith in Jesus and love.
  • We integrate our exceptional music program deeply into our ministry and worship.
  • We provide pastoral care to make sure that members of the congregation of all ages and circumstances feel supported.
  • We offer adult education on Sunday mornings and during the week that is intellectually stimulating and deepens our individual and communal spiritual lives.
  • We provide members with opportunities for service both within the church and in the community.
  • We are a welcoming place for seekers and those who are new to faith.
  • We focus on the importance of stewardship to sustain the ministries of this church.
  • We make our facilities available to local organizations and community events.

  • We are a safe place of worship for all people, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status. We are a PC(USA) More Light congregation.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

While Hitchcock is located in a generally affluent area, we are called to serve the broader community, which includes households with a wide range of socioeconomic circumstances. We want to connect to our neighbors of different faiths or of no faith, and we hope that our new associate pastor will help us to identify new opportunities consistent with our vision. Our current efforts include:

  • Preparing and delivering food and clothing to NYC's homeless population through Midnight Run.
  • Presbyterian Women’s activities, such as managing a thrift shop and donating the proceeds to charities, and preparing 200 meals monthly for a local soup kitchen.
  • Weekly Adult Forum and youth programs.
  • A Wednesday program that includes children’s choir practice, community dinner and Kerygma Studies for the adults.
  • Providing meeting space for AA.
  • A health ministry with several health care professionals.
  • Providing worship space for the Union Japanese Church of Westchester.
  • Hosting the New Choral Society, whose concerts are attended by the community.
  • Serving as a chartered organization for Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops.
  • Hosting community events, such as the annual Christmas Carol Sing and Party, Chili Cook-off and Lenten Organ Recitals.
  • Maintaining the Hitchcock School with certified teachers, offering an excellent pre-school education.
  • Living in America, which provides cultural and language immersion for international adults living in our community.
  • Monthly worship services for a local senior living facility.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

Our newly-created position, “Associate Pastor for Mission, Community Outreach, and Church Families”, will facilitate the next and most important step in Hitchcock’s evolution. We are thriving, enthusiastic, diverse and very active. With the addition of a full-time ordained pastor concentrating on mission and membership, we will be able to clarify, communicate and expand on what the Lord is calling us to do for our congregation, our community and the world.

Our vision for mission is to be the hands and feet of Christ. We desire to manifest the will of God through action.  Working with the mission committee, this position will help inspire, expand, and implement, current and new mission opportunities.

Our vision for community outreach is to foster and to create connections within the walls of the church and beyond. We aim to extend the reach of the congregation into new communities without pretense.  This position, working with the membership and church growth committee, will help to increase the presence of Hitchcock in the community through community involvement, social media engagement, and new member development.

Our vision for our church families is to nurture relationships with people of all ages and minister to the entire family unit.  Working with the Faith and Nurture Committee and the Hospitality Committee, as well as the Christian Education staff members, this position will seek to engage the entire family unit in spiritual growth and active participation.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
  • A pastor who is compassionate, nonjudgmental, approachable, and engaging.
  • A visionary leader who is interested in our mission and outreach to the greater community.
  • A citizen of the world who appreciates and celebrates the blessing of our diversity.
  • A servant of God who is rooted theologically in the progressive Reformed tradition.
  • A strong communicator who is comfortable in a variety of settings, including social media.
  • A willing partner who is able to encourage, support, and develop our many existing programs.
  • An able representative of Hitchcock in the wider interfaith community.
  • A shepherd who, leading by example in both personal and professional life, inspires us in our journey to live as God would have us live.
  • An individual who is seeking a long-term relationship with Hitchcock Church.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The Associate Pastor for Mission, Community Outreach, and Church Families is a unique position that will reach across a broad but related range of the church’s activities.

Mission responsibilities include establishing and working with a mission committee, managing the mission budget, working with our current mission programs and planning mission excursion opportunities for members of all ages.

Community Outreach will involve projecting the vision and mission of Hitchcock beyond the walls of the church, establishing and working with a membership committee focused on church growth, and participating in local ecumenical and community organizations.

In the area of Church Families, our associate will work with the Christian Education staff related to our programs for children and youth, and will seek to extend ministry for the entire family unit through programming and social opportunities, with a focus on intergenerational interactions and relationship building.

In addition, as an ordained Presbyterian minister, the associate pastor will be involved in pastoral duties that include participation in worship and pastoral care for members of the congregation. While preaching every Sunday is not a requirement for this position, the ability to deliver a well-organized, meaningful sermon will be expected as many as 12 times a year.
