Brief Church Mission Statement:

We are here to continue Christ’s work, inviting people to personally experience God and be transformed into followers of Christ, reaching out in love and compassion to a world in need.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

The Presbyterian Church at Tenafly is a faith community which enjoys fellowship and outreach. Located near New York City and comprised of members from throughout Bergen County, our congregation looks forward to gathering to celebrate our faith. We take great joy in our young people and they are an integral part of worship and mission outreach. The musical talent of our young people is a special gift our church celebrates.

Our mission is to provide a place of joy and acceptance. It is a church whose members find mission work fulfilling and necessary. One member shared, “Going with a church group to New Orleans post Katrina was life-changing.” Our church family is a close one that supports one another through difficult times. We strive to be welcoming and hospitable to all who enter. We look to grow our numbers, but more importantly, to grow our faith and to be of service to our community and the greater world.

We have a history of doing mission projects and they form the basis for our yearly calendar. World Blanket Sunday, Crop Walk, Souper Bowl Sunday and volunteering at various homeless shelters are just a few ways we try to connect our mission with the needs of our community and the world. We look after those in need through visits and prayer. We work with other area congregations to celebrate accomplishments and mourn tragedies. We come together on Sundays to share our joys and concerns and we praise God's glory in our lives.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Our previous Pastor was an energetic leader, who expanded our horizons in the arts, mission and community with the Mayor, the Board of Education and local houses of worship. We want to continue our various outreach programs in homelessness, food drives, women’s shelters, interfaith events like the Thanksgiving Interfaith Service and Faith in the Arts events. Our annual fundraiser, Pennies For Heaven, featuring the numerous Broadway and professional musicians in our congregation, raises money for a variety of causes and engages not only our congregation, but the entire community. Our church is stable financially and has served this community for 150 years, opening our doors during traumatic times like Hurricane Sandy and September 11, assisting and sheltering those in need. We are blessed to share our facility with several musicians who teach lessons and another Congregation, Grace and Love. Our Christian Education coordinator is trained in Christian Ed and provides a solid foundation for serving young people and engaging them in worship services, camps, and mission trips. As our congregation ages and attendance at our services drops, we are committed to understanding our challenges and seeking more effective ways of extending our ministry to our community and reaching out to those members who are not attending regularly but might be interested in returning. Our congregation is committed to continuing our mission and service as we move forward with our new Pastor.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We recognize that growing our church in this modern era is a tall order. We are looking for someone with energy and enthusiasm who can work with us to reach out into the community and spread the good news of Christ. We want our new Pastor to tap into our strengths like music and mission, letting people know we are a welcoming and caring congregation that serves our community. We would prefer someone with experience in church growth but energy and an outgoing disposition could work as well. Through mission projects and other church events, we would like our new Pastor to reach out to young families and college students, including those who have already graduated, but are not currently interested in attending church. Staying involved and being aware of the needs of our older community is also of great importance since we are an older congregation living in a community with an older population. It is our hope and desire that with our new Pastor, the Presbyterian Church of Tenafly will reach out to our multicultural community and continue our mission to continue Christ’s work, inviting people to personally experience God and be transformed into followers of Christ, reaching out in love and compassion to a world in need.

Romans 12:8. If it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Know that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

We are looking for a pastor who is vibrant, smart, and sincere with a sense of humor. Our weekly sermons need to be inspiring and challenging. We are looking for someone with compassion who understands people and who can relate to our joys, sorrows, needs, and dreams. We are looking for a person with deep personal faith, who is intellectual, well-educated and spiritual. We are looking for someone who can challenge us intellectually and elevate us emotionally. We seek someone who is committed to mission. Our members have felt the impact of mission in their lives and they would like to continue helping people in need. We understand church growth is challenging and we pray for someone who is interested in working with us to attract new people to our church, especially young families. We hope our new pastor enjoys people and is comfortable meeting our neighbors in our multicultural community. Our hope is that our new pastor will ensure our community knows our doors are open and everyone is welcome. A strong interest in the arts and mission is also critically important. We are blessed with an exceptional music program and we have learned our surrounding community is also keenly interested in music, drama and the arts. We would like to do even more in this regard, as it matches our strengths with the community’s interest.
