Brief Church Mission Statement:
Our mission:  By the grace of Jesus Christ, we are called to worship God, to connect in community, to nurture in love, and to serve the world.  Our vision: Palms is a diverse and transformative community of believers embodying the grace of Christ by serving as bridge builders for a divided world, working as ambassadors for compassion and reconciliation, and growing servant leaders for God’s work in a rapidly changing world.  Our values:  compassion and love/spiritual growth/service and connection/creative spirit/honesty and integrity
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Palms Presbyterian Church is a Matthew 25 church called to serve the marginalized in our community and the world beyond. In actualizing our vision of being bridge builders, ambassadors, and servant leaders, we welcome all who seek a place to worship by sharing our traditional yet highly creative, imaginative, and biblically based worship experience.  Our worship ministry includes an inspiring music program, widely regarded throughout the north Florida area. We extend hospitality to all and offer individuals and families a place to discern their gifts and serve God in profound and meaningful ways. We invite those of all ages to join in our robust, multi-generational fellowship and Christian education as we also nurture and enrich our large senior membership. Our theological diversity is a strength we embrace, knowing we are bound together as one through God’s love.  Palms has benefited from the stewardship of our congregation by raising more than $11 million since 2004 for church facilities, renovation and maintenance. Consequently, we have the resources to embrace exciting new opportunities for mission and programs that will have a meaningful impact on our disciples and the community.  Palms strives for continuous improvement and evolution, building on our current strong foundation.  Within the church, we aim for fair, transparent, and organized governance and staffing aligned to the session and engaged with our congregation.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Mission is vitally important in the life of Palms.  The church plays a leadership role in the community by providing strong support for critical services like BEAM (emergency services) and Mission House (homeless mission).  Recently Palms developed a highly creative “adopt a school” program with three beach schools, as well as Kids Kitchen, a summertime food program.   Palms is hands on and generous with financial support.  After recognizing the existence of a food desert at the north end of the beaches, Palms partnered with an elementary school, neighborhood church and BEAM to establish bi-monthly food distribution for hundreds of families in the area. This is in addition to Palms volunteers serving weekly at BEAM’s food pantry.  This heart for mission extends internationally through Palms’ decades long partnership with Haiti Outreach Ministries.  Multiple mission groups from Palms visit Haiti every year: medical, educational, construction, and clean water.   Mission is also modeled through Palms’ leadership and hosting of the Common Grounds community dialogue program, seeking to bring people with different viewpoints together to build consensus.  Palms Preschool with an enrollment of 105 children was established in 1985 and has maintained a stellar reputation.  Palms also takes great pride in offering its facilities to community organizations for gatherings to learn, serve, and be in fellowship.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

Palms seeks a pastor who will deliver inspirational and relevant preaching that excites seekers and disciples to reflect on leading Christ-like lives. The pastor will exhibit these beliefs through meaningful engagement within the church and throughout the community. Through that engagement, the pastor will help us envision new possibilities and have the courage to plan and execute them. This type of leadership will help to reinvigorate our educational platforms and approaches to the benefit of all–from children to seniors. Furthermore, we desire a pastor who will inspire a solid foundation for joyful financial giving. The pastor will be key to leading, teaching and modeling behaviors of respect, reconciliation and love for each other regardless of differences. Strong interpersonal engagement builds trust in an environment where differences are viewed as a strength. We seek a high energy pastor with excellent listening skills who can acknowledge and value the variety of perspectives our disciples hold. Having organizational agility, leadership, and management acumen are desirable traits as well as the ability to communicate effectively with the congregation and staff. A pastor possessing these traits will position our talented staff to deliver their best within a defined but flexible structure. To grow and expand our local community and worldwide efforts, we expect the new pastor to network with key community leaders, local faith communities and mission partners.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

The pastor called to Palms needs to exercise a variety of essential characteristics to represent our congregation, staff and community. Pastor will be a strong, articulate, personable leader who preaches scripture-based, inspirational, unifying and relevant messages. Pastor will demonstrate integrity, display spiritual maturity and exude energy. Pastor will be approachable, have a sense of humor and be able to celebrate and grieve with Palms disciples.

As an effective leader, the pastor will provide strong executive competence, encourage teamwork, make sound decisions, delegate appropriately and manage a large staff effectively, identify and make changes deemed necessary. To accomplish this the pastor must have excellent communication skills. Pastor will demonstrate the ability to manage conflict and diverse views within the congregation. Palms’ staff and congregation seek a pastor who has the talent to listen well and who is highly attuned to a collaborative environment. The ability to communicate effectively is particularly important in establishing Palms’ forward-focused vision and short- and long-term strategies with the session.

Pastor will be a bridge builder to the community, reaching out to all in Christ-like humility and caring. Pastor will welcome all to Palms--a place of warmth, full of joyful worship, with outstanding music and dedicated disciples of all ages.
