How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Sycamore Presbyterian Church serves six different zip codes. We are a well-educated, affluent, and generous congregation. While our congregation is fairly homogenous, our community is undergoing a change with the influx of residents from different cultures and economic backgrounds. To embrace these changes SPC supports more than a dozen local/regional organizations through the donation of our time, talent and money. We are establishing connections with these agencies who also serve this changing population.

We also develop congregational connections by serving together. Our members participate in an annual Community Service Day where all generations work together to serve neighbors with light housework, yard work and other tasks. We have found a sense of mutual caring, trust and belonging while serving others together. A special neighborhood connection continues through our annual festival called Lawn Fete, which has been held for 112 years.

SPC is an active congregation. We believe we are at our best when we serve and bless those less fortunate than ourselves. Our members find both fulfillment and a sense of Christian community while serving our neighbors and friends through Matthew 25 Ministries, Interfaith Hospitality Network, Sugartree Ministries and numerous other community support groups. The depth and strength of these relationships is central to our mission of service.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

The Head of Staff position will supervise the employees and serve as the Pastor (PHOS) of the Congregation. This individual will help to transform the members and friends of SPC into empowered disciples of Jesus Christ by identifying, developing and utilizing their God-given spiritual gifts to serve and glorify God. The membership considers spiritual growth essential to the strength of the church. The PHOS will be able to motivate the congregation by sharing a clear and consistent theology.

The PHOS will be responsible for leading the congregation from the pulpit as well as developing the lay leadership and staff to support the goals and vision of the congregation. This individual will need to have the ability to affect change when needed while keeping the church focused on an inspired vision for the future.

By empowering the leadership and members of the congregation, the PHOS will help to foster feelings of teamwork, using traditional tools and strategies, as well as including new technologies. The PHOS will encourage the church to continue to engage the neighbors and larger community of the congregation in all aspects of worship and service to Inspire, Connect, and Serve.

SPC has been blessed with Pastors who were gifted, inspiring speakers and involved leaders. The congregation expects the new pastor will carry on the legacy and be the voice for the congregation to insure the future of Sycamore Presbyterian Church.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

We are a conservative church, proud of its heritage and preference for traditional worship. Our core values are built on relationships with God, each other, and the outside world. We seek to continue to grow our faith, cultivate our congregation young to old and contribute to our community.

We are a mature Congregation, not ethnically diverse, and part of a community with changing demographics. These challenges are opportunities. SPC has many positive attributes: strong fellowship, wonderful facilities, and a devoted Congregation eager and enthusiastic about contributing to SPC’s next chapter.

Our Mission Study (MS) is the bridge to the critical attributes of the person who will lead the Congregation and address opportunities identified in the MS. Our PHOS must have a strong ability to inspire spiritual growth from the pulpit through effective communication. We regard this attribute, in whatever stage or setting, to be the Foundation to motivate the congregation, staff, leadership and youth and attract new members.

Our PHOS must have leadership skills that collaboratively contribute to developing, executing, and optimizing our strategy and vision, and to successfully articulate and lead change from a holistic perspective. We believe effective decision-making and bridge-building across diverse views is important in encouraging the Congregation to participate in the continued success of SPC. We expect our PHOS to accomplish this humbly and as a Servant of God.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

Our Mission Statement is our blueprint for continuing to focus on God’s future for SPC with respect to our rich 200-year history. We envision a PHOS to have a wealth of preaching and worship leadership experience to inspire both the congregation and to engage visitors in the church’s vision and spiritual journey. We would like the PHOS to incorporate a variety of both traditional and technically enhanced methods of communicating to the congregation and to engage the surrounding community.

Successful programming should reach all demographics within the congregation and the PHOS will not only be asked to preach but teach, counsel and inspire the members. Pastoral care and mentoring are an essential part of the leader’s role in any faith-based organization, but SPC is dedicated to the care of the congregation through numerous projects and the PHOS would be expected to participate when needed.

As the PHOS, the candidate will champion projects to bring younger families to call SPC their church home, and to enhance the diversity of the membership from the surrounding communities. The PHOS will be successful in securing the membership’s willingness to embrace these changes. We will look to the PHOS to be decisive and strategically focused to bring new experiences to SPC and the embrace the rich tradition of the SPC journey of faith.
