Brief Church Mission Statement:

“Embraced by God, Equipped to Serve, Engaged in Community”

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Central Presbyterian Church (CPC) takes seriously Christ’s dictate, to be & to make disciples for Christ. CPC values worship, scripture, prayer, study and service. Key identifiers of CPC are our generally progressive but diverse theological beliefs & our commitment to action. As we grow in relationship to Jesus Christ, we welcome others to join us in transforming our community & our world through loving service in Christ’s name. Central’s large vision comprises three primary goals: (1) Embraced by God, feeling God’s provision through worship, education, & spirituality; (2) Equipped to Serve, learning about ways we can serve through ministries of care, communication, connection, integration, and evangelism; and (3) Engaged in Community, finding ourselves in active community through thoughtful ministries that challenge the people of Central to put our faith into action as we serve as the hands and feet of Christ in the world. CPC enacts this vision through 5 primary strategies: (1) provide worship to meet the needs of a diverse community; (2) cultivate a spiritually engaged congregation by providing educational experience for people of all ages and in all stages of discipleship development; (3) enfold members and friends in a caring community of faith; (4) as a Big Tent Church we strive to reflect the diversity of the community by inviting others into our dynamic community; (5) engage in service that supports positive changes in lives challenged by poverty and injustice.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
Blessed with a rich heritage and Foundation, CPC members have energetically supported mission throughout our history. We challenge ourselves to put our faith into action through partnerships with congregations and organizations that address the tangible needs of our neighbors in Greater Lafayette and the global community. Our mission outreach has included activities in our facilities: hosting a program that assists homeless families, a community Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas Jubilee both sponsored by an interfaith organization that provides various services for low-income clients, and mobile food pantries. We provide volunteers for community programs and a local food pantry. Along with other local Presbyterian churches, Central provides money and workers to build a Habitat for Humanity house every other year. Monetary gifts are given to a food bank, Lafayette Urban Ministry, Mental Health America, a health clinic and the Presbytery of Wabash Valley. A Pastor’s Benevolence is available to assist congregation members. A World Mission Support team was formed to interact/support Presbyterian Mission co-workers who serve in Africa, and we also support programs in Haiti and hunger relief worldwide.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

CPC is characterized by both diverse beliefs (theological, political, social) & respect for this diversity. CPC members share core beliefs: the Bible contains the inspired word of God & provides guidelines for living that should be interpreted through the life & teaching of Jesus; in Jesus we find forgiveness from our sin; & there are different ways to experience & grow in faith, from sudden conversion to progressive growth. We ordain both men & women to leadership positions. We subscribe to & uphold the position of the PCUSA relative to homosexuality, calling to leadership members without regard to sexual orientation. While a majority of our congregation supports providing our facilities for same sex marriages, funerals & other celebratory events the same as we apply to heterosexual couples, this policy has not yet been formalized. We accept the scientific explanations such as evolution & climate change & seek to ethically apply our knowledge for the betterment of humankind. We are working to be a model of collaboration with a shared ministry, creating a balance & continuity moving forward. As a big tent, theologically diverse & deeply thinking community of believers, Central is poised to help heal an increasingly divided world. Central’s Pastor will help us live into our vision by enabling development of programs & policies that build on the strength of our diversity, extends our ministry to families & children, & supports our commitment to Jesus’ mission in the world.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

Central is seeking a skillful pastor who is a charismatic, dynamic, & thought provoking preacher to be a co-pastor with the desire, & skills, to increase responsibilities to head pastor during a transition period toward retirement for CPC’s current pastor. Due to our proximity to Purdue University, our congregation of high education level & theological diversity demands a pastor with a strong theological background & the ability to make sermons interesting & relevant to a wide range of audiences using a variety of approaches including in-person & online/virtual. CPC’s pastor will need to shepherd our congregation in an organized, & confident manner. This requires a good problem solver & effective delegator who is experienced with change leadership, knows how to guide a congregation in growing a church, has a “can do” attitude, & doesn’t procrastinate. The pastor should have a collaborative mind-set in working with the current Pastor & the community, a vision that respects tradition while moving Central towards the future. Interpersonal skills including energy, self-confidence, sense of humor, good listening skills, approachability, & the ability to interact well with people of all ages are important to Central. Our pastor should have spirituality that combines both inner strength & mature faith that is outwardly manifested by Christ-like conduct. The responsibilities of this position should not prohibit a rich personal life or enjoyment of strong, healthy relationships.
