The members and friends of Rock Prairie Presbyterian Church worship God our creator, believe in salvation through Jesus Christ His Son, and live daily with guidance from the Holy Spirit.  We share his message of love and salvation with others through worship, prayer, fellowship, and service.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

At Rock Prairie Presbyterian Church - also known as The Church on the Prairie - we celebrate our history and heritage dating back to 1847 when farming families from Scotland established our first church.  About one third of our members work in the farming community. The rest work and live in nearby cities. 

Our ministry focuses on growing in faith and numbers, making necessary changes and developing a comprehensive strategy to reach out to new people including families with children and youth, and incorporating them into the life of the church to compliment the existing membership that is already fully invested in our future success.  We are a compassionate church, seeking opportunities for our members and friends to form meaningful relationships, and working toward a common goal of Christian living and discipleship in a divided world. We are willing to adapt our worship to the needs and circumstances of all members. We recognize the importance of music ministry that deepens our worship experience.  We want to be examples of God’s love and forgiveness in our service to others as well as good stewards of His many gifts in our lives. 

In a recent survey of our congregation, we learned that we ranked high in Spiritual Vitality (the degree to which we believe that faith is central to our lives) and Readiness for Ministry (how we engage and support our members in the ministry of our congregation).

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Identifying emerging needs and ways to act upon them will become more apparent with the arrival of a new pastor. The process of developing a way forward will include listening to the voices in our congregation and working with the Session. Needs may include: (1) recognizing our aging congregation; (2) developing leadership skills in our younger generations including our youth; (3) examining successful programs and projects of the past and breathing new energy into them or reimagining new opportunities; (4) engaging in meaningful dialogue and collaboration with local area churches; (5) developing new opportunities with a continuing commitment to follow the example of Jesus Christ through our service to church and community, not only through donations, but with hands-on opportunities; and (6) finding creative ways to increase our revenue streams and cash reserves with the primary goal of continuing to support mission work in the Janesville area and around the world. We are also in the process of refining our online presence for worship and outreach, while at the same time doing our best to welcome new people on Sunday mornings, and make them feel comfortable in the pews during our worship services.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We are looking for a vibrant pastor who will be our spiritual leader on the path to becoming a healthier Christ-centered congregation filled with new life and energy.  We want to partner with our pastor in looking for opportunities to serve Jesus both inside and outside of our church.  

The setting for the transformation of our congregation is a beautiful contemporary church with a lovely two story manse in the midst of flat land and cornfields on a little piece of heaven on earth called Rock Prairie.  From here you can watch the glorious sunsets to the west.  From here you can engage people and teach them to not only follow what Jesus said, but what He was doing. From here you can make your mark as a pastor who has made a deep commitment to the discipleship of Jesus Christ. 

We would like people to look at our church and say, I want what those people at Rock Prairie Church are getting, a deeper walk with Jesus.

A pastor:

  • who is committed to our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ through word and example.
  • who preaches sermons that educate, inspire, and encourage church members and friends to grow their faith and become willing participants in the leadership and service opportunities of our congregation. 
  • who will preach scripturally-based sermons and relate them to our lives and times. 
  • who will cultivate collaboration among people of different ages, from various walks of life and theological viewpoints.
  • who will be involved in local area communities through connections and collaboration with leaders from other churches and community organizations in the area.  
  • who demonstrates well-developed, mature boundaries, and who will give leadership to the spiritual development of our adults and youth, and our deacons as it applies to pastoral and congregational care, including guidance and counseling opportunities.
  • who is honest, humble, compassionate, and approachable…

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

Our pastor will be primarily responsible for preaching the gospel and leading our teaching ministry. He/she should be committed to growing and being involved with our youth ministry.  We expect our pastor to work with Session in generally supervising our office staff and other church employees. We also expect our pastor to work with our deacons in providing pastoral care and guidance and counseling to our members. We encourage our pastor to work with other churches in the area to further our ecumenical sharing of the gospel and community service in our neighboring communities, and to participate in our youth and adult mission projects/trips.
