Brief Church Mission Statement:
We must GROW to achieve our vision:  Grow spiritually and in numbers.  Rejuvenate Christian Education for all.  Open our hearts and minds to new opportunities.  Worship God in the reformed traditions putting God before ourselves.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
Our church is noted for our hands-on and financial dedication to both local and worldwide mission.  Church members have taken mission trips to various locations around the United States to help during and following disasters to include 9/11; Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ike as well as state-wide disasters.  Following a flood in our community in 2011, we remodeled our lower level to include a shower room and bedrooms with bunkbeds to host mission groups who came to our community.  We have a very active mission committee that provides congregational impetus to support local charitable and faith-based efforts in support of those in the community with physical and spiritual needs.  We support the local food bank through donations of both time and food, support several charitable organizations with monetary donations, and have supported school children in need with new bicycles.  Our Presbyterian Women's (PW) group strongly supports both local and worldwide mission projects.  We work to promote reconciliation and a sense of church family that cares for each other through prayer and by actively caring for each other to meet congregant needs.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
Chartered in 1964 as a mission church we have an understanding of the importance of a worshiping home base from which to reach out to the community.  We have a very active PW, men's monthly breakfast, adult Bible studies, movie nights and a children's education program ready to grow as we grow.  Many of the members are active volunteers in a host of community organizations.  Oahe Presbyterian Church designates 10% of the committed offerings from our members and friends to mission each year.  We also support the four church-wide special offerings of the Presbyterian Church (USA).Yearly mission funds from the church budget are distributed to Pierre Area Referral Service, Feeding South Dakota, Hughes and Stanley County school counselors for student's needs, The Church of Hope at the Women's Prison, and for supplies for the Community Banquet.  Mission projects include collecting and donating food for the Pierre Pantry, filling boxes with food for senior citizens through Feeding South Dakota, and helping with Habitat for Humanity projects.  Boxes are filled for Operation Christmas Child and bikes have been provided to students in need at the Pierre Indian Learning Center.  PW raises money to help victims of sex trafficking and provides burial gowns which are donated to hospitals around the state for babies born prematurely.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
Pierre, the capitol city, is located in central South Dakota, an area known for its abundant outdoor recreation opportunities including fishing, water sports, hunting, camping and hiking.  Many people have chosen to live here because of these amentities.  Our pastor is an integral part of our community and enhances our ability to work on our vision and mission goals.  We are a small but vibrant congregation seeking a pastor who will provide spiritual and intellectual leadership.  The pastor works closely with church elders to provide both inspiration and leadership in the works of the church.  We seek a pastor who is ready to roll up his/her sleeves working closely together with the Session on issues concerning the daily activities of the church such as growing our community of faith.  We strive to utilize the older members with their experience, knowledge and commitment while supporting and encouraging our younger members with their energy and innnovative ideas.  Together the pastor, elders and congregation work collaboratively to meet our mission objectives both within the church as well as the community at large.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
We are looking for a pastor with energy, ability to lead and inspire, and someone who is grounded in his/her faith and able to communicate clearly and effectively.  A pastor with compassion who could (and would) make personal contact with a small and friendly congregation.  Faith-based preaching that is relatable to the congregation is a strong desire of the congregation .  Lead us with strength that comes from self-awareness and life experiences to face challenges that may arise.  A teacher who will walk with and lead us.  This includes a plan on how to sustain growth so that we continue to be God's presence in our community.  Able to nurture the spiritual life of our congregation.   Characterics needed by the person who desires being called to Oahe Presbyterian Church include:  a unique ability to understand and explain God's Word; can work well with an older congregation; has a clear personal love of Jesus; and a deep love and burden for people and souls; has a warm personality that people respond to well; is a clear communicator; has a strong ability to empathize with those who are hurting; has a clear wisdom and discernment into life and its struggles; is loving and compassionate, and is honest and accountable.  We are not looking for a superhuman; but a humble servant/leader with a strong faith conviction.
