What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
Our vision is to be an inclusive, Christ-centered congregation that shares the good news of God’s love in Jesus and welcomes all people into the Body of Christ, equipping and supporting them to serve our community and the wider world in practical compassion, addressing issues of personal need as well as social justice, local and beyond. We support this vision through our worship, education, exploration, Bible Study, small group ministries, fellowship opportunities, service outreach, and faithful stewardship.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
We recently added a new sanctuary, offices and fellowship hall. Our guiding principle was “more room to serve”. The new space offers a variety of welcoming venues for community groups and our church outreach activities.

We hear God’s call to move beyond our church walls and share God’s grace and love in broader and deeper relationships; to know and love individuals as they are; to be the hands and feet of Jesus in new ways.

With new leadership, thoughtful prayer and an increasing understanding of our community, we seek to equip ourselves to practice “radical hospitality” beyond our church doors. We sponsor numerous community outreach projects (Food Pantry, Soup Kitchen, Free Showers, Energy Outreach and Benevolent Funds) and our church hosts many community groups and events. We want to expand our efforts to the wide emerging needs of our community which range from disenfranchisement, homelessness and transiency, affordable housing, and substance abuse all the way to religious preconceptions, youth mentoring and infant/toddler childcare shortages.

In short, we want our relationship with God, each other and the community to be irresistible, engaging young and old alike.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
We want our pastor to articulate in preaching, teaching, and in daily life, the loving vision of God for all people, as seen in Scripture, in the life of the Church, and in human experience. We want a shepherd to help us grow through worship, fellowship, education, prayer, and lay involvement. While respecting the diversity of experience and belief within our fellowship, we want to use the gifts God has given us and be transformed to the image of Christ so that all people and communities will know to whom we belong.

Our community and world are changing, and we need to change with them. Salida and Chaffee County share the common wounds of 21st century American life: social and political divisions and insecurities, environmental challenges, income disparity, and the impact of illicit drug use. The challenges and opportunities of our mountain valley reflect reality around the globe.

We are looking for a pastor who can be comfortable with change, embracing challenges and helping us to walk together into the future. We will confront opportunities ahead, and we want to nurture both our young and our older family members in that process. We desire to forge bonds and serve as agents of change with other faith traditions and to serve people of no articulated faith. And we pray to continue to be a spring where fellow travelers of diverse backgrounds, faiths and experience will drink deeply of the grace and love of Jesus.

We seek a leader to serve people within our church and the wider community. We want someone whom God has prepared with spiritual gifts as well as through the abrasions of life. Humor, humility, authenticity and genuineness rank high with us.

We like a communicator who blends study and stories. We desire a person captured by God’s grace and eager to shout, “Wow, check this out!”, yet able to gently suggest, “Have you thought about this?” or perhaps even admit, “I’m not sure, but let’s keep talking”. We seek a man or woman who values relationships as much as “being right”, able to engage personal, cultural and theological differences in shared pursuit of God. In other words, someone who is willing to embrace and wrestle with difficult questions.

We need a bold leader who inspires and equips us for service, steps back and declares, “Look what we did”! We desire someone familiar with budgets and accounts to help us see the implications of how we use our money. We want to tackle the challenges of living out divine love daily and proclaim that God changes lives, working within to make us willing and able to live lives of love, justice and peace.

We are a mountain community, familiar with winding trails, long ascents and sudden descents, dry stretches and hidden streams. We seek a life-long learner to share our journey, with its joys, pain, doubt and discoveries. In tough times we will lean on our shepherd, but we expect them to lean on us when she or he needs support as well.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
We expect our pastor to:
  • Preach and guide the congregation toward spiritual growth, reflection and action within our immediate and greater community. Organize and lead worship services in coordination with Associate pastor and leadership.
  • Encourage spiritual development within and beyond the church. Teach and oversee within the Christian Education Program.
  • Build internal capacities and deeper community by empowering individuals and developing their capacity to serve and lead within and beyond the congregation. Maintain communication and relationships with appropriate service and leadership teams and supervise those activities.
  • Supervise full and part time staff. Moderate session and congregational meetings. Working with session, implement vision, values, objectives and strategies of the church, which includes its financial health. Participate in Presbytery.
  • Administer the sacraments. Officiate weddings, funerals, memorials and baptisms in coordination with Associate Pastor.
  • Facilitate meaningful interactions with others who use our facilities.
  • Conduct and/or delegate a ministry of visitation and care.
  • Promote a culture of hospitality, inclusivity and outreach to the community.
